I had an IQ test done as part of a neuropsychological exam. The WAIS-IV.

My Working Memory and Processing Speed scores dragged me down all the way down to a Full Scale IQ of 127 despite my "Very Superior (98th percentile)" range for Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Reasoning.

The Dr. told me my results were a perfect example of a high functioning adult with ASD.

So my question to you high scorers is, how in hell did you do well on working memory and processing speed? Sucking in those areas = a normal part of having autism.

Correct me please if I am wrong or missing something. Keep it simple so my lowly 127 IQ can handle it.

same problem, i do really well in the verbal and perceptual but then the working memory and processing speed drags me down, i got 126. it was mainly because id take too long to answer the question or my memory would just make my mind go blank

I was in that upper range, don't know if I still would be. People on the spectrum have individual differences, aptitudes, capacities - some even excel in team sports though it amazes me. Yet some do. That's just how it is.

Mine is 139, while verbal wad only 97. I scored 155 only logical mathematic and in the 130s on spatial I think. My working memory was above average and processing speed superior.

My information processing speed is HORRIBLE. my working memory is meh, my verbal IQ is very not good, and my visual and spatial skills are fine, spot on.

I dont have a number, he just gave me "high average and low average."

For me, I did well in working memory and processing speed tests in the calm, low-stimulus, very structured, very familiar environment of the psychologist's clinic, but I have a lot of difficulty with these things in my normal life, because normal life is so much less controlled, and it's louder, there's more people around, there are social conversations happening, etc., etc.

I scored high on the IQ test because I work well in that environment, but the environment of the IQ test is very different from most other environments. So that's why I could do well on those subtests, but still suck in those areas in the rest of my life.

IQ is only a measurement of the ability to solve problems, it is not an all encompassing score of all of your mental abilities:

Quote:
Even when students improve their scores on standardized tests, they do not always improve their cognitive abilities, such as memory, attention and speed.[11]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligence_quotient

I got a good score on a preliminary mensa test and i scored highly on a similar test for executive functioning which was a recruitment test and more focused on problem solving, but that does not help the fact that i'm highly asocial, gets stressed out in crowds and have problems making connections with other people.

Keep in mind that percentiles don't measure variance at the extreme ends very strongly. If you look at this chart of percentiles and IQ scores, a percentile score of 99 (100 is never given) can be anywhere from 135 to 202 IQ. Meanwhile the difference between 50th and 52nd percentile is from 100-101.

Percentiles reflect what percentage of the population scores lower than you on this scale. Since the population's scores are clustered around the middle, percentiles are too.

A 98th percentile can be anywhere from 131-134 IQ, so your IQ was only dragged down around 4-8 points.

I think the bottom line is that we're all different. On the Aspie Quiz, for example, I score very highly on autistic talent and perception, but also pretty high on neurotypical talent and perception; whereas my social and relationship scores, are almost entirely autistic. In practice, I don't have problems with working memory or processing speed, and when I was a given an IQ test as a kid, I got all the questions right. Bottom line, I can figure just about anything out, but my social and practical abilities would embarrass a five year old! It's frustrating, really, because my social and emotional issues make it hard for me to use my mind as I should.

My parents kept it hidden from me for a long time. I think they didn't want me to think that my IQ was the most important thing about me or something, but in order to get into the top public high school in the state (where I spent 4 years), I had to pass an "entrance exam." Well, apparently that entrance exam was just an IQ test. One of my fellow classmates from years past told me that everyone they accepted scored minimum 145 on this IQ test. I had to take it twice to get in, to be honest. The first time I was so nervous that I fell asleep ( I know it sounds weird, but I used to stress sleep as a kid). The second time I was accepted. I don't know what my score was, but apparently it was over 145. I've taken some of the longer online tests and scored usually around 148, though I know that one is not official.

Anyway, my advice to you is not to worry about a stupid IQ. If you need to get it in order to do something, that's different, but it's not that accurate at measuring things like creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, which actually make a person intelligent in my opinion.

How do you tell what the IQ score is for each of the different parts of the WAIS-IV? I got an overall score of 108 but got very high in some parts and very low in others. They only gave me percentiles for the different sections.

Verbal Comprehension: 86th percentile
Perceptual Reasoning: 95th percentile
Working Memory: 30th percentile
Processing Speed: 15th percentile

FULL SCALE: (FSIQ): 70th percentile or 108 score
General Ability: 95th percentile

For comparison, i got 132 on the Stanford-Binet and 153 on the Raven Progressive Matrices

A: They are intrinsic traits. We all chart out somewhat "spikey" and despite trends no two are the same, even among HFA's in the 99th %-ile.

Outside of a testing environment, though, you learn to compensate and use your other strengths to work around your shortcomings when you have to solve practical problems. If your mental notepad (ie working memory) is holding you back, learn how to use an actual one effectively to fit your thought processes. For instance, I have days when I know my working memory is near-useless due to depression, dysphoria, lack of sleep, and so on. On those days I have a notepad permanently in my hand. I write everything down as I'm doing it, as if I'm taking coded notes of my thoughts. It's like flow-charting your thoughts to augment your brain. In the real world no one cares what your test scores were; they care about what you can and cannot do. So you learn to do, in as much as you can.

This is a lot like me. Espcially the getting lost part (but i can find my way around Goole Earth great). It does feel quite ironic to me to supposedly be a "genius" in one repect but still be as dependant as a little kid. Whilst I am able to get into the mindset to perfrom well on such tests, trying to maintain that level very long, I'm pretty surw would cause me to have a mental beeakdown.
