I was diagnosed when I was 5 and much (but certainly not all) of the criteria fits me to a certain extent. However, the digestive problem symptom is totally the opposite of me. I've heard autistic people do well with red meat and its the only food that gives me a mild stomachache. Other than with red meat or when I'm sick (like the stomach flu or food poisoning) I rarely, if ever get stomach aches.

Anyone else?

Where did you hear about autism having digestive system effects? I get stomach aches very rarely, and it's usually when I'm constipated, and I haven't pinpointed any specific food that causes it.

I get the occasional stomach ache, but nothing any worse than what most people get. I've read that autism is associated with a lot of gastro-intestinal problems, but I seem to be pretty much getting away with it, so far. I've been vegetarian and into wholefood since the early 1970s.

Yes, people on the spectrum often have GI issues, especially irritable bowel syndrome. I've heard has led some researchers to propose that the GI problems actually cause the autism, and not vice versa, and that simply changing diets is a "cure."

Then consider yourself very lucky, OP. It's the number one symptom that bothers me.

Numorous studies show stomach issues are much more common for people on the spectrum

Children who have autism far more likely to have tummy troubles

Quote:
Children with autism experience gastrointestinal (GI) upsets such as constipation, diarrhea and sensitivity to foods six-to-eight times more often than do children who are developing typically,

GI Problems in Autism May Originate in Genes, Study Suggests
Quote:
Children with autism spectrum disorder are four times more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal problems than other children.

I have had digestive issues all my life. They've actually been getting worse the last few years. I can't really comment about red meat, as I've never liked it very much and rarely eat it. I eat mostly grains and vegetables.

Consider yourself lucky. I sometimes get stomachaches; hunger pains (acid), period pains, diarrhoea cramps, constipation discomfort, bladder pains, and rarely, indigestion.

But I'm saying I don't have any AT ALL, that is the thing. The fact that I don't have an GI issues is actually making me doubt my diagnosis.

GI issues are not diagnostic of ASD, they're just a commonly-observed feature. My own GI tract is normal but my brain wiring isn't.

I have severe digestive problems, as in they couldn't get much worse.

Much more likely does not mean definitly. If you have most of the traits and overall they impair you there is little reason to doubt your diagnosis.

Having GI issues is NOT diagnostic criterium for having aspergers, or autism. So if you dont get stomach aches except once in a blue moon that has nothing to do with whether or not you have autism.

I am like you in that I dont get GI issues except once in a blue moon from eating bad food or a bug or something. And it IS bizarre to me to read stuff on WP that connects ASD with GI issues. I guess some autistic folks puke alot, but I dont anymore often than the average person. So I relate to you finding that connection hard to relate to.

Sometimes stomach aches are attributed to the anxiety that can follow autism. But some people claim bad gut causes autism, it was dropped once but picked up again in another shape.

I can be stressed out and I have both anxiety and panic issues. Stomach issues nope, not so much. I should at least have some kind of nervous stomach? Nope, never had.

As for gut bacteria, I know my guts are healthy that way because some starches can only be digested with the help of them, for instance beans. I eat beans and other food in the same class without any issues. When people talk about gas and bloatedness I'm like huh? Also my body sucks nutrition out of anything. People say you don't absorb corn if you swallow them whole... oh yea I do.

I'm glad I have a good tummy cuz there are so many other things wrong with me.

Digestion and similar don't often give me problems.
