Hi I am hfa and I have to wear basketball shorts or sweat pants everyday with a loose shirt. I feel the need to do this because I don't like the way tight clothing feels on my body/skin. Is this a typical symptom of autism? Do any of you guys do this?

Yeah...this sort of thing is pretty common.

As long as your clothes are clean, it's cool.

I buy all very similar looking clothes but in different colours and then alternate them every day.

I often wonder if people notice.

I did go through a stage of wearing exactly the same outfit every day. I had loads of the same pairs of trousers/shirts.

As a benefit, it really helped me not to have to think about putting an outfit together and what would go best with what. It reduced stress in the morning on that front.

However, after a while I sensed that people did start to notice (particularly as my outfit didn't change with the weather), and that made me feel uncomfortable so I stopped doing it.

I believe I've struck the balance right now - I wear the same trousers every day, the same cardigan whenever it's cold, and just change my top so that the outfit looks different. All tops are still a similar style (all tunics), so that I don't have to think about which style to wear, but I think I blend in more now.

Yes, I am mostly like this. When I need to buy clothes, once I find something I like, and that fits, I usually buy several of the same thing, in several different colors. Then I don't have to keep looking for more outfits. I also tend to keep the clothes until they literally wear out. I will cut battered sleeves off of tops and sweaters to turn them into vests, to get even more wear out of them.

I can't stand too tight clothes, and I do have a skin sensitivity problem, so I have to watch out for rough tags on the back of the neck, too tight neck lines--so crew necks are out, and I also have a problem with most foot gear, as most of them have a rough seam at the inside back of the heel, which will chafe my heels raw, even through thick socks. I will only buy foot gear that doesn't have such a seam facing the heel. I can't wear those flip flops with the divider between the toes, because that will cut the space between my toes within a minute or two of putting them on. When I was a kid, my being fussy about foot gear because of these problems bothered my parents. They just didn't think believe that I was really having so much trouble with foot gear. Besides, they were shelling out a lot of money on special foot gear because my feet turned out, so they didn't really want to deal with me not liking those shoes. They finally stopped buying these special shoes when I was a preteen. Both of my feet still turn out some, one more than the other, so I tend to doubt the effectiveness of those "special" shoes.

My take on clothes, is, if you are paying for it, buy and wear what you want, within reasonable limits--but no thong bathing suits for either gender. Nobody on the entire planet looks good in those.

my wardrobe tends to be kinda like a cartoon character's wardrobe...

after years of trying different combinations of clothes that never really felt right (i HATE shopping for clothes...), i found a "formula" that i like, which is normal-looking, cheap, flexible and convenient, and i generally stick to it

i am very aware that when people see me frequently though they will notice it and find it strange, and i do take that into account. it just hasn't been a relevant factor in the last few years

I like tight clothing because it's constant.
I don't like how loose clothing keeps brushing against or contacting different areas of my skin.
If I wear a loose shirt, I'll wear a singlet underneath.
I wear similar-looking clothing every day.

You know...I think a lot of neurotypicals do this too and just don't realize it. I used to work with this girl who was a very snappy dresser. But then once I walked into Anne Taylor Loft (a store in many malls) and found that everything my co-worker wore was in that same store! I thought, man, how brilliant! If you get everything from the same store, it will all certainly match and be stylish.

Once I was in a class where not only did some of the girls all buy from all the same store, but they thought everyone else did too. It was...Abercrombie and Fitch? Or...one of those that's like that. Like, a store with the blonde haired people with the tans? Anyway, this team of girls gave a FASCINATING presentation about how whatever store that was hired people who physically looked the same and piped in a specific perfume so that all the stores smelled the same. But they also kept making comments like, "You know how we all wanted clothes from [Abercrombie/whatever it was]?" I thought it was really interesting to honestly think that everyone else had the same thought as you. It was a Theory of Mind Failure, but from neurotypical people.

I always wear just a t-shirt with sweatpants if it is cold or plain knit pants or shorts in the warmer seasons. I hate shopping for clothes in stores and prefer to buy things online whenever I can.

I like to wear the same clothes everyday too. I have sets of clothes which are identicle. Like many others here I like loose comfy clothes. I'm most happy in a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants and will stay in those clothes all day if I can get away with it. If I have to go to work or out though I wear loose cotton trousers and a loose cotton top.

I wear what you wear too, and I'm a girl. Other times, I wear pajama bottoms as well. It's also hard for me to wear tight clothing, and I think this is a sensory issue for most Autistics.

I wear a short sleeve plaid flannel shirt with jeans every day. Lately I have been thinking about switching to long sleeve plaid flannel shirts because it would reduce the amount I pick at my arms, that's about as extreme as the variation in my clothing is though.

When I was younger I wore tight fitting clothes because they felt like armor against the world. I literally thought of them in those terms . Always jeans, never any other kind of pants. On the rare occasion I wore shorts it was always an old pair of jeans cut down.

When I entered the business world I wore suits. Tight fitting always black. Black pants, shirt, tie, jacket. Then a friend took me shopping and helped me select some gray suits with a set of 3 shirts and 3 ties for each suit.

Then I met the woman who would be my wife. I also started working from home and by this point my confidence had improved and I didn't need armor anymore.

I now have a reasonably wide variety of shorts and shirts she picks out for me to approve when we shop. Then at home she lays out my outfit each day for me or I would wear the same thing everyday (even then if I am not going out its not unusual for me to wear the same shorts for a week at a time).

She has to pick out my clothes as I have zero interest in appearance and just pick the first thing my hands find in the closet. Luckily for me she doesn't mind choosing what I wear.

As I don't need the armor my preference turned to loose fitting clothes. I can't stand anything tight fitting anymore. I feel constricted if I wear tight clothes to the point of panic.

I don't have a choice. I only have one pair of black pants, one pair of shoes, and my red t-shirt.

I almost wear the same clothes every day but strive not to. I'm strongly inclined toward wearing the same thing every day because I find the process of figuring out an "outfit" holds more stress than fun for me, and I also tend to get strongly attached to favorite items of clothing that I have found works for me on several levels. An item will become a favorite due to factors such as ease of wearing, comfortable, looks better than other items, and goes with something that has also become a "go to" favorite. Then I get stuck in a rut.

I would like to wear more of my stuff as I actually have a nice, broad range of really pretty clothes I've put together over the years. I'm wearing about 5% of what I own! I'd like to have that software the girl in the movie Clueless had, which generates outfit ideas for you, from the whole of your closet contents. I have nice things and never wear them because it's easier just to put on the same limited rotation of favored garments. I often buy things in twos if I find I've attached strongly and only want to wear that thing.
