How to collect Comic Books and other comic related materials

This is for anyone who is into comics and other comic related materials such as movies, toys, etc.

I have just recently started collecting comics. I am a really big DC Comics fan (Batman, Teen Titans, Constantine, Green Lantern are mostly my favorites) and I have collected mostly all the new 52 issues that I am interested in.

What I want to know is how do you collect comics? I am wanting to start collecting some of the older issues before the New 52 and I want to know how do you all keep track of these comics that you have collected and need to collect.
