Stimming is something that you don't want to do in public. But you have to do it to relieve stress. Just in the same way, I manage sensory input loads. I too take care of my stimming needs the same way. It's a matter of locating and going to a quite/private space to do your thing.

I actually do stim in public. Not rocking. But they have these things on Amazon; Fidget toys, which means you can carry them in your pocket or your hand and fiddle with them. There's nothing wrong with someone fidgetting with a twisty bendy thing in public.

I've gotten to this point, where I don't care how it looks to some people. It's relaxing.

Not An Advertisement, just some examples of what I am talking about:

I believe everyone stims, regardless if your autistic or not. Sometimes autistic stims are just more obscene than non autistic stims.

I think its healthy, as long as its not hurting you and is only helping you get through the day, then do what ever it is you do, flap your hands, hum, bounce, rock back and forth, swing your arms. Go nuts.

I used to stim by hitting my head on walls, i was forced to stop and now i just rock back and forth when i need to but usually i dont need to anymore.

I stim almost all the time in public. I rock back and forth and I flap my hands a lot.

Well it is hard for me to follow your post when you type that way. You don't have hit Enter every time you type. You can hit the Space bar.

I think the need to stim and the severity of the stimming depends on the level of autism.

There is more to the autistic stim than just a nervous habit.

The true autistic stim is something autistic people do to make up for a neurological impairment.

I personally have to stim a lot. Yes people do stare.

I have use a lanyard to twist around and chew on to help keep down my more noticeable stims to be less of a distraction.

I have to stim whenever. Occasionally in a day at the least, the most easily seen being complex hand movements.

It's a repetitive behavior.
It creates order out of chaos.
Rhythm and repetition create predictability and order.
It channels input from the senses and modulates thoughts.
