Someone started a thread about passing as an NT. What are 10 things a person needs to do to pass as an NT? I don't want to myself. I'm just curious about what that means exactly.

(sarcasm)
a nt has an iq of 100, it needs constant confirmation and goes around mirroring others, learning at heart, uses eyecontact and verbal exchange to keep up with the groupthought (like feromones do for hives)

NT stands for Northern Territorian.
To pass for a NT you must wear an Akubra hat, jeans, chambray shirts and cowboy boots. You must have gone on a roo shoot and pegged a razorback, own a blue cattle dog, hang out in the pub, drive a Landcruiser ute and say "struth" a lot.

This site holds the diagnostic criteria to be classified an an "NT".
(Note: this is meant to be sarcastic)

NT means NeuroTypical. The neurology of the majority. Nothing more.

To 'pass' as an NT, you have to blend in public. Do not stand out, do not make an impression, wear common unimpressive clothes or common uniform. Be inconspicuous; hidden on plain site. Nothing 'too much Xs'. Don't look like you're displaced.
To 'fit in', you comply to their social rules. Showing common grounds, common strengths, common weaknesses you can get away with. Having enough command of their verbal and nonverbal language to an 'average vibe' -- not too smart or too dumb. Not too closed off, not too spontaneous.
Anything beyond blending in takes charm, skills... Something unique. But that's up to you.

The current NTs' nature is to comply to their given culture.
So pass off as NTs, you follow their culture, their social expectations regardless the means.
Because even NTs themselves are guilty of this, not just NDs.

I don't know what your current context is. So I cannot give you a direct answer. Only the concept of it.

Observation would come to mind. A lot of interesting remarks.

well that right there is something you don't do if you want to appear generically normal  (i mean, trying to understand what something means exactly, without any particular reason why you would need to)

there was one time when a person actually asked me, "you never try to sound like you know less than you do?". that was a very weird question, very out of the blue. i don't know if she was trying to identify whether i had some kind of autism or what (she has an autistic son, and is more than familiar with the concept). people normally just seem to find it funny that i tend to spew out wikipedic factoids to "break the ice" or when i'm excited about a certain topic

but then again, when i say "people normally", i mean here in my home country. culture and context do make a big difference. the essence of blending in is to change your colors according to the background

To be an NT you must be fake at all times. Laughing at things that you don't think are funny, asking how somebody is when you don't care, and telling them that you're there for them when you're not are a must.

I am never sure what people mean when they say NT... do people with things like learning disabilities or ADHD count as NT, or does NT mean 'not autistic'? The definition seems to vary from person to person. At least that is how it seems to me. *shrugs*

Any which way... I am inclined to agree with what Edna3362 wrote. I like that answer.

Yeah even after all my time here, I still don't quite get it. But my life is very sheltered and the only NT people I am around for the most part are my family and teachers and staff at school for autism. So I don't really have any experience being out in the real world and having to deal with a whole bunch of NT people. What/whoever they are.

I just don't really feel the need to though. [/color]

Neurotypical means normal, average, medium, and sameness. While all NTs are unique individuals in their own way, you are expected to be the same on the outside (outside meaning appearance, body language and behaviour). So any NT can dance around naked around their home with a lampshade on their head when alone, but once you are mingling, for example out in public, you MUST be the same as everybody else.

People in public don't care about what's going on inside your mind. All they care about is how normal you look. And if you break any rules about that, you will be judged as "weird", even if you are not weird. So don't do anything out of context.

Neurotypicals aren't everybody who aren't Aspies, by the way. Some people can be non-NT and not on the spectrum, who also are easy targets for bullies and struggle to fit in. My friend with Fragile-X is a perfect example.

Also, when around friends/colleagues, banter about sex or alcohol. In my experience, people love that.

Look, I've been passing daily for about the last ten years and I'm still not sure how to answer this. It's hard. There's a lot of little nuances, and you're often just following a script. At some point you realize they are too, they're just less cognizant of it.
