Now that I think of it, I did seem to do better as a kid when I took karate classes. I had better coordination and self-confidence, and wasn't as bothered by bullies. Too bad I moved to Bearsh*t, Nowhere. Time to look for YouTube tutorials.

martial arts have become one of my strongest passions to ever have come across. they do require challenging the senses, as the touch and close proximity of a partner is required for most, and depending on the dojo environment they may be rather social places, so there is good tempering there for making improvement to endurance and tolerance of such difficult things. though, it does seem true, during form, my focus pours entirely into the discipline... and even during long form and surrounded by students and teachers for evaluation, it's as if nothing in the world exists but the flow of that form. the other noticeable benefit has been a drastic increase of controlled movements(no longer feel particularly troubled in conscience about striking arts being too ruthless in application for self defense with such found control), improvement of hand eye coordination and gauging distance. so it has occurred to me, learning, and then learning to teach such a physical discipline through example, may very well be a somewhat therapeutic way to the self sufficiency that almost everyone close in my life has told me, and continues to tell me, such self sufficiency isn't possible with my problems.

recently quit a karate-like art though, despite seeing it viable to learn and make applicable to defense with my frame. my interest has largely become invested in deciding upon which and learning an art or two(to study more than two would be hard to keep teachings pure/separate and in constant meaningful practice without fusing the styles into one) that don't require a young form, a certain build, or a specific level of fitness for useful application, so that they can be taught to the people who are more likely to be targeted for assault so that they can defend themselves, instead of training intimidatingly fit athletes to defend themselves/others considering there are already so many schools for such people. my mind is leaning largely toward pursuing study of wing chun and possibly also tai chi chuan(though, judo and aikido are possibilities). my main issue is in figuring out a way to regularly travel to a dojo and train(can't teach without being taught by credible instructors), as there aren't any in town for any of the forms mentioned.

I am searching for a good, basic, affordable, Taekwondo-forms book online. I studied Taekwondo when I was 13- and 14-years of age. I loved it. Now, 40+ years later, I want a book for casual exercise.

I used to be a blue-belt in Karate, but I eventually stopped because I didn't care one bit about tournaments or gradings. Plus I would always push myself too hard and end up hurting myself.

I was a green-belt. I actually enjoyed sparring with my friend-of-Chuck-Norris black-belt instructor, but I never even watched a tournament. You know, that old autism thing of being comfortable with the known class versus being afraid of the unknown tournament.

^I won gold, silver, and bronze as well as a trophy in several tournaments, but I often completely forget about them until the medals clink together on my bedroom doorknob. [Yes, I didn't put my medals in a place of honor--I just unceremoniously hung them on my doorknob.]

Congratulations! I wish I had stayed involved. But, I transfered to a different high school, and lost touch with the class at my former junior-high school.

^I wanted to leave many times, but I felt like I had an obligation to continue, as well as making my mum happy and living up to everyone's expectations.

[The trophy--or rather a small version of it--sits on my dresser, but I often forget it's even there, too. ]

I just dug out my AKBBA certificate of my orange belt signed by Allen R. Steen and Michael Holmes. Apparently, Steen was a bigshot. Michael was my instructor.

I prefer dancing to Karate, though I do like the Bo/Naginata katas.

Combine dancing with your katas!

^That could work, although I currently don't have a space big enough to wield my Bo, and I don't fancy dancing around outside in the middle of winter, either. :) [Though there is a picture in the dojo of one of the senseis doing a Bo kata in the middle of winter in a snowbank--barefoot.

There are a few Martial Arts clubs at my school, so I try whichever one I find most appealing.
