Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Anyone had any experience trying the techniques associated with this therapy?
My therapist has given me a recording to work on over the next week, the 'hexaflexercise', but i find several aspects of it quite distracting.
Firstly there's a huge chunk that talks about being in the appointment, which I'm not.
Second, the constant talking makes it hard to concentrate.
And third, the 'flowery' language is not something I'm used to.
Also my therapist has a lovely voice and accent and so the whole thing risks turning into a relaxation excercise

Diagnosed ASD Aug 2016, confirmed Dec 2016.
Also have OCD and various 'issues'.
Am not sure if I buy into this type of therapy.
How does hexaflexing help with acceptance and commitment?
Yes, I am ignorant about it and will admit it.
Anyways, maybe you could bring up the questions you've posted here to your therapist?
Hopefully the therapist can tailor her approach to you based on your needs?
I wish you the best of success.
I've done a 6 week course on ACT ( once a week for an hour ) and basically the bulk of it is mindfulness and few other things like the serenity prayer. I found mindfulness difficult at first but after practice it became easier in a safe surrounding but very difficult to implement in real world situations , I don't think mindfulness is for everyone but logicaly it makes sense and has helped me with anxiety. We were told that reading the book "The Happiness Trap" by Dr Russ Harris would be beneficial ( I got 3 chapters in before I got sidetracked ). This is the URL for The Happiness Trap website https://thehappinesstrap.com/ , I don't know anything about the course thats offered on that website but it could be useful reading for you. Here is a video I found on youtube with an ACT metaphor that might explain things

Hypocrisy is the greatest luxury. Raise the double standard
Intriguing cartoon, SaveFerris,
Thank you for posting it.
Did you pick your user name from the Ferris Bueller movie by any chance? That would almost fit with the cartoon. Here's a quote from the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" : 'Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.'
I think what's gotten me through life is that I had a father who encouraged me in my creativity and interests, and a grandmother who said that I never had to take a back seat to anybody. They were both very supportive.
And also, you mention the serenity prayer. I would say prayer has always been important in my life as well ... and you know what? One time when I asked God what He wanted me to do when my situation looked nearly hopeless ... that's when I found out that I should be an artist.
I think you're right, that motivation like the cartoon is nice to think about in terms of studying it, but in the real world, it's good to find real moral support that goes beyond. ... And yes, that can be challenging.
...
What I should add is I haven't been diagnosed ( waiting for assesment ) and the ACT course/s I have been on aren't tailored to specific issues ( I was sent on them for anxiety & depression ). What I would say is , if I knew I had ASD ( didn't even suspect I had it on the 1st course I was on ) , I could of approached ACT in a different way and I believe it would of been more effective.

Yeah , it's from FBDO , I was a very impressionable teenager when it came out and I loved that film , I am unable to watch it without quoting 90% of the dialogue

I think you have been very lucky with your supportive family as not everyone is that lucky ( I have a supportive family but their preconcieved ideas of mental health is a bit old fashioned , and eyes are rolled when ASD is mentioned ).
I think the serenity prayer is used more as a mantra than a prayer as I think ACT doesn't involve religion or at least is not tailored for it as we live in a multifaith society. Although to be honest I think ACT has it roots in Buddism.

Well, not all of my family has been supportive ... the ones who were most supportive have since died. At least I had a good start in life, and do indeed consider myself blessed in that way. If all you get are some eye rolls, then I consider you lucky, too.
I thought I sensed something "new-agey" about ACT, now I understand why it wouldn't be for me. I'm just not into that.

I didn't mean to infer that that you were luckier than me regarding support , sorry. Compared to the horror stories I've read here my familes support has been exemplary.
I definately got the feeling that ACT has it's roots in "new-agey" but don't let me be the deciding factor in wether you think ACT is suitable for you , I am not a great reviewer of things

All is well, SaveFerris,
I'm happy to hear of anyone who is receiving wonderful family support ... and wish it could be that way for all families.

As for the sense I had about ACT when I researched it online, I based it on a gut feeling that came from the terminology being used.
Quite frankly, I think autism is more pronounced as a "problem" these days because people are less loving towards each other. I personally think we need more love, patience, understanding, and acceptance ... and fewer psychobabbling counselors talking about hexaflexarexa-this-and-that.
...
The diffusion technique is great. I found this YouTube video funny and useful:

The techniques work best for thoughts that bother you, but that you don't wholeheartedly believe in.
