I have had problems w/my feet.
I am diabetic - adult onset/second-level - and, I am homelss (Right now I have a temporary place).
I had 1/2 of my middle left toe amputated recently. There had been a long-funning sore on the bottom of one of the toes(the big one, not the one that was amputated) I had, after antibiotics, finally gooten rid of the big toe problem, but then the middle toe
When I got the operation for it they were, they said, just going to look, really, but they ened up amp-ing the 1/2 toe.
Now, there's a similar wound on the second toe of my right foot they have me on antibiotics again.
I just need to rest more really but when you're homeless...(I am at a charity place's computer that/libraries/similar, that's how)

Is this the right board, really? And also, not to be prudish or anything, but what specifically is the purpose for the post? To broadcast your troubles or to talk about foot issues in general? How does it erlate to autism?

Don´t be rude, I think he just wants to hear some help for his problems.

If you´re homeless, you should look for a place that gives shelter for homeless people, I´m pretty sure that there´s a one somewhere near you. Beats sleeping under a bridge, anyway.

Hank, I commented on your other post about your brother, who is say is very low-functioning a autistic person. I have lived with diabetes for 28 years, type I, juvenile-onset, insulin-dependent type. It sucks, but it doesn't have to ruin your life. I don't usually talk about it because there is no reason to bring it up in conversation.

You don't have to suffer with secondary complications, of which poor foot circulation are one of the most common, because all you have to do is get your blood sugar under control. You know and I know that this is from poor glucose control. Right now, you are in a bad position. You have to stay on top of this, test frequently, and take your meds. You can't drink and ignore your health because a lot worse will happen if you continue to do this. Did you talk to the social worker at the hospital? Find someone who can help you and explain the situation about your AS diagnosis, tell them you are a high functioning autistic person and can't take care of yourself.

You need to go to whomever has been involved in your diagnosis or care and explain what is happening to you. RIGHT NOW. I want to hear from you that you have taken some positive steps to get help. I will be happy to help in any way possible, via the forum or PM. But you have to do something before you end up in renal failure and that's a very real possibility. I'll be waiting for your response. People here do care!

er ok
as a student nurse i am writing an essay on diabetic feet at the mo
you need to go to hospital or a walk in centre or the doctors as this could get much much worse
i dont know how it works over there
but here i would tell a patient to go to there GP and get a referal to a diabetic foot clinic
this is serious and must not be left

HankPym,

I agree with everyone here. Here is what you *****HAVE***** to do!

1. GET OFF THE STREET!
2. GET INSULIN!
3. MONITOR THE INSULIN CLOSELY!
4. GET CARE FOR YOUR FEET!
5. GET SHOES!
6. CHECK YOUR FEET CAREFULLY!
7. GET A PHYSICAL!

For once, I AM yelling! Mismanaged insulin leads to bad blood vessels, nerves, and slow healing! That leads to neuropathy and internal bleeding. That leads to ALL SORTS of things including blindness, amputation, etc... The feet are one of the first things to go due all of the above.

BTW This isn't the right place to talk about this.

The Forum you need to be posting at and looking for help is the HAVEN. If you are in a shelter the
staff should be made aware of any and all medical, legal, and social issues you have.

SteveK, I doubt if he takes insultin. People with adult diabetes make insulin but can't use it. It's an different disease from Type I. They usually take oral meds and need to stay on their diets. He has a lifestyle problem which probably does belong here. It takes a long time to develop secondary complications from diabetes, so he has been ignoring his health for a long time. It is a slow and painful way to commit suicide. I hope he gets help.

To briefly answer some things, shelters are not, forone, condusive, even,to getting a nights sleep and for two, tend to breed TB here.
I would like to rest my feet, etc.I can't do it whil;e homeless.
I get SSI/D and some irregular other money but I don't have the $ to " start out " get a place,etc....Plus my appearance etc.
I am trying to go back to collge ( SF City)...However , I can't go in and see an advisor and he'll sign me up then & there...That's TV movie stuff.( Aside from being Aspie non-social,too.) , my previous HS/college records are all f****d up in a complicated way , I need to be able to call people/be called back...Etc.
I do drink/eat too much sugar-y stuff , it's what's available/something to reach for .

My mother in law is in the hospital right now recovering from having her second leg amputated. She's diabetic too. The first foot was amputated because she dropped a can on her toe and got an infection and it never cleared up. The second leg was taken off after she got a blister from walking around too much and THAT got infected.

I have that too. My footprint has two separate pieces: toes and heel. The top of my foot archs so high that most shoes hurt, and I have never ever found a pair of shoes that had an arch support that even touched the bottom of my foot.

I know there is a kind of insulin resistance, but I thought the treatment was the same.

It is a lifestyle problem, but not of the nature of others in here.

Yeah, I KNOW it takes a long time. He HAS had this problem for YEARS! It is getting towards the end. He is seeing the last 3 major effects. He could be dead/crippled and/or BLIND within one year! He apparently thinks his amputation is bad. One or two more toes, and he could be LAME, but he could lose his foot, or even his LEG! Gangrene could set in!

On the last two, I certainly agree with you.

I have neuropathy but not from diabetes. The dr assumes its from either the autoimmune illness or Lyme disease both of which I have. I don't have diabetes. Also have flat feet and arthritis in feet.

About diabetes sores recently research just came out a good way to heal those sores is to actually put insulin on them. No kidding! There's all kinds of papers coming out how insulin heals wounds. Also for neuropathy without sores you can get relief through far infrared light, also called Anodyne Therapy if you go to physical therapist. I did that for awhile till I couldn't afford PT anymore, but it helped get most of the feeling back in my feet while I did it. Far infrared creates nitric oxide under the skin which increases blowflow and circulation in the extremities so that's how it works. If you have good insurance you can get a home Anodyne unit.
