After learning what echolalia is, I wondered if I have ever done it but couldn't recall ever doing it. Yesterday, my wife asked me a question when I was distracted and I blurted out part of her question. No one found this strange but I immediately realized what it was. I've probably always done this when distracted but no one has found it unusual. Is this ASD specific or something everyone occasionally does?

I've only ever heard of small kids and people with language disorders doing it.

I've had similar experiences: Once when I was in a restaurant waiting for my order, I overheard someone else ordering and, without thinking, repeated what that person said.

I have echolalia. I don't copy people's words in conversation but I copy animal noises, random sound effects, television prompts, instrumental music sounds, etc. I don't know very many people who do this who aren't autistic.

I think there is a separate term when people copy / repeat words in conversation as you describe. I forget what it is.
