Share Your Stories - Siblings on the Spectrum
Growing up, I think I benefited immeasurably from having an older brother. This isn't just a rosy, peachy-keen view of things (though we do get along great). In a way he served as a cautionary tale. He struggled through a lot in life, so I vicariously learned a lot of important lessons about what not to do through observing him. I adopted his successful strategies, and avoided his mistakes. It was great for me, but unfortunately I think seeing me seemingly breeze through things when he had so much trouble left him feeling inferior and jealous. But without his example, I would have been just as lost as he was.
How would you say having a sibling - on spectrum or not, younger or older, brother or sister - affected your life growing up? Do you think they made your life easier, or did they make it a living hell? If you were an only child, how do you feel about your lack of siblings?
