My 8yr old girl has just received a diagnosis for ASD with social anxiety. We (parents and teacher) were surprised by the autistic part but not by the social anxiety. I was kinda expecting an Asperger's diagnosis but our Dr said they dont call it that anymore and she is autistic. My immediate concern is how to explain this to her . Any thoughts? Or resources . She know everyone is different and has pretty good self esteem.

My son is almost 7. All that I've told him is that we're a little different. It's harder for us to make friends. He's not very interested right now, so that's about as far as I've gone with it. I think you should keep it at their age level and like anything else, just be open and honest if they ask questions.

If she's going to have some therapies then he might ask more questions. It's not necessary to name it right now.

I wish your family well.

The best book I have read to date is "nerdy, shy and socially inappropriate' - written by a female autistic adult.

I would suggest you start there as the book provides a rounded and broad context, as well as provide you with some time to frame up your own acceptance and a plan on how to represent.
