I see a pattern in the video game characters I like:

They are all sidekicks

I never had a real friend until I was 12. I looked up to my fake friends, but I was never good enough. Could there be a link between this life experience and my my favorite video game characters?

Yeah! There could be a connection, if you feel that its there. I mean, its your experience after all.

sidekicks are undervalued but very important. maybe you empathize with your favorite sidekicks because you wish more people would appreciate what you have to offer?

I tend to emphasise with evil characters who have a glimpse of humanity to them. For example, Mello. He genuinely cares for Matt and doesn't want Soichiro to die despite him being in possession of his real name.

Main characters always have too many issues going on. I think I gravitate towards sidekicks because they're less likely to A) have love interests and B) be human.

I definitely think it's easier to like a character that you can relate to.
