Hi,
I am not sure if I and asking this question in the right place however if this is the place to be asking would you please be able to point me in the right direction for some help we are I. Need of dyer help!! !

My son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum wakes up in the night and immediately starts terror crying and running back and fourth in his bedroom screening and unable to sooth himself we have tried everything from night lights to music to going in the room and laying with him for hours with all no success of him ever going back to slep.... the crazy part is is that on nights he does not wake up and do this "terror screaming" for a lack of a better description he will sleep almost 11 hours straight from 6is to 5ish..

Our main Concern is that now he has recently just climbed out of his crib and have put him in his toddler crib were we think when he does his "terror screaming" and running in his room he will hurt himself, where as before we would try to let him just selfsooth himself in his cry which by the may have been an hour or so of "terror screaming" which is also heart wrenching, but he would eventually go back to sleep. Now he has a verg high possibility of hurting himself while I guess attempting to self sooth, which before took maybe an hour to accomplish in his crib, we are not sure or have the guts maybe to see how long it would take and we are not sure if it is worth the risk of him hurting himself also.
So the question is have you heard of this before? Is is common amongst kids in general? And sorry I forgot to mention he is currently 2 years and 5 months old, also these "terrors screams" did not start occurring till he was around the age 18 months till 2 years old. Where before he was an amazing sleeper 11 12 hours a night with no occurances of this "terror scream" what so ever.

Another question we have is are there any suggestions to deal with this dilemma, a) preventing him from having them period, b) stopping them fast when they do happen, c) keeping him safe for a way of selfsooth in through them?

Please if you can help us.

Sincerely,

Frank
Proud Father

I get night terrors, also, and I hate 'em. Even though I'm asleep, I feel like I'm wide awake, something dire is about to happen, and I have to struggle like mad to wake myself up. VERY annoying. Medication didn't help, but beer does. Can't recommend that for a kid, though. Anyway, night terrors are a medical issue so I've linked to some professional medical sites.

I always get these. Almost every night. I'll wake up from a scary dream, and see something creepy in my sight (usually a spider or something like that) then run around screaming until I am snapped out of it. Sometimes I won't even remember having them, and would wake up with blood and scratches on me. Nothing you can really do about them when he is really young. I find that when I take some benadryl (dph) or any benzodiazepine before I go to sleep I won't have these.

After reading the responses and looking at the links you have provided... thank you very much by the way!! ! To both of your responses I am not sure it is night terrors any more my son when he wakes up just sits up not crying right away. I think/feel when he realizes he is in his crib/toddler bed now he freaks out and starts crying and now he gets right out of his bed and startsscreaming bloody murder no words just screaming like he is scared to death of something and can not self sooth.

Is it possible for you to have a night light or a night light projector thingie that projects stars to the ceiling or something else that could occupy him and stimulate him?
