Anyone ever changed their most major special interest?

I've been a Star Wars fan since I was seven years old sitting in my local Odeon and that huge Star Destroyer came over making the seats shake. I watched the films endlessly (on Betamax tape as I recall) and collected all of the Star Wars collectable cards. Later, as an adult, I got into the comics and what's called the expanded universe which is a collection of extra stories in books and comics set in the same universe. I collected action figures and vehicle models too.

But now, since the Star Wars comics moved to Marvel, none of the old expanded universe stories are continuing - just the new stories which are all set around roughly the same time and are quite limited in theme and number of issues. I'm still buying most of them but the joy I had from the stuff I read for years is missing.

So I began to look at other comic series and discovered various fantasy series - Dragonlance, Dungeons and Dragons, The Legends of Drizzt and the World of Warcraft comics. This week for the first time I had a Warcraft comic to read and a Star Wars one and I chose the Warcraft one first. That's never happened to me before and it feels strange and a bit scary. Will I lose my nearly 40 year love of Star Wars? I can't see how my life could be without it. That said, I'm loving the new stuff so I'm not sure how I feel.

Has anyone else gone through this? What can I expect? Any tips?

I've changed my main special interest from Britain and The Kinks to Germany, war and Hogan's Heroes. It's the best thing I've ever done. Just in time for Brexit, too. No, not really. It's just a coincidence that I've switched over to the other side the same year as Brexit.

I think it's just a part of life to move into new interests. When I was younger, I was obsessed with horses. I still love them and I still would like them but my focus has shifted to dogs and cats (I can identify most by their looks).

I also was obsessed with Dr. Who (at least until Claria came in) and OUAT (until the actors and creators made several digratory comments about the LGBT*Q community) Currently I'm in love with Marvel, Orphan Black, and Harry Potter.

I also have gotten more into crafting and trying to teach myself how to sew and have taught myself how to do other things.

So my interests have changed over the years / continue to change but I think that is something both NT and people on the spectrum do as we grow and learn about ourselves.

Im going on to my 7th year of a special interest in sonic, since 2009 when my special interest started, ive liked

- ferrets
- hedgehogs
- dogs
- psychology
- Breaking Bad

And loads others, just recently i thought i was loosing interest in sonic, until yesterday, i walked into a store with a Sonic merchandise motherload. And i freaked out, i got myself a sonic pocket watch and new sonic blanket. There was also a sonic bookbag and hat but i chose the watch and blanket. I was still excited for like an hour after buying my stuff and cant stop checking my watch.

The thing is i dont think the other interests were special interests, they were pretty intense but too short lived to be a real special interest.

Yeah, I used to be obsessed with 19th century composer Robert Schumann. Then for years now it's been the writer Virginia Woolf. I actually made a promise to my wife to let go of Virginia Woolf because she noticed that I was more depressed when I was steeping myself in Woolf's world. I've had mixed success with this, but I did in fact get rid of my copy of Woolf's diaries. Most recently I've gone back to an old obsession from junior high and high school, opera singer Cecilia Bartoli. I was probably one of only a very small handful of teenage boys who were into an opera singer, though, at first, I pretended I cared about swimsuit models and actresses, trying my best to fit in. But nobody wanted to ride in my car in high school, because I just couldn't allow any other music, no matter what people thought.

My interests are pretty fluid, I go from one thing to another.

Since sixth grade my main interest incorporates four things WRLL Watching Video, Reading Text, Listening To Audio, and Looking at Pictures. As long as I am doing one of those things I am fulfilled. Your main interest can change. Also you could be interested in new interests and may come back to star wars and be even more obsessed. Or if an interest changes drastically you might not enjoy the new direction it takes so you focus on something else. There are many reasons why interests change.

For me it was rap from a very young age, had a couple yearsof skateboarding obsession which was good but it always came back to the music.

My special interests tend to burn bright and furious for 2-5 years and then just fade away to the point that I'll sometimes avoid those things a little afterwards. Just remember that it's perfectly normal to like different things. I think it's also ok to feel some sense of loss. It's almost like coming out of a long-term relationship. It's part of your life that isn't there anymore. But things change.

Yes, I've been through The Beatles, Doctor Who (especially Daleks), photographic developing and printing, and even with my lifelong special interest of music I've bounced around between complicated multi-track recording and live performances with just voice and guitar. I'm also obsessional about singing as well as I possibly can, but I have long breaks from that.

yes i agree with others above that accepting new things is a part of life.

a special interest is like a best friend and it will forever be an important part of your life, but it doesn't have to be a constant. forcing a special interest after its over makes things worse imo.

i think you are a more diverse person than a company can ever be and star wars was awesome but nothing stays the same...i'm sure you can find something else you enjoy exploring and it seems like you've begun doing that anyways

and i know its hard to "let go" but its your life and you should be happy following the interests that excite you. if that isn't star wars anymore then that's just a part of life. there is more to come and its most important that you enjoy your interests.

Branching out and exploring is vital to growth. It doesn't have to be a radical switch, though. I find my "beautiful obsessions" tend to branch out from two perennial themes; nature and creativity. Whether it be drawing, painting, woodworking, camping, birdwatching, etc... If I'm not being creative and/or in touch with nature in any way, shape or form, I get depressed, anxious, and am prone to terrible meltdowns. It's what keeps me balanced and sane.

My changes is usually on how I obsess things instead.

Major ones? From hoarding to application.
So I used to be obsessed with collecting papers and stationaries (some time kinder to grade 2). Then I got obsessed with origami. (Grade 4 to 1st year HS)
From collecting various coloring supplies and shades of ink pen. Then got obsessed with drawing and doing doodles. (Some on-offs)
From reading various psychology and sociology articles. (At 13 to 16) Switched to actually facing people and knowing instead of just reading. (17 to present)

Regardless, I'm learning and I like it.

I've been interested for sience for a long while wich is became more concrect as i started to highly interested about smart cities as well as street lighting technologies and solution (especially LED lighting).

Oh and just in the last few years I became interested in webcomics. Not the classicals like Marvel or DC. I visit GoComics for daily comics and Hiveworks Comics and Spiderforest Comics for story driven webcomics.
