I had an amazing memory for about five years, very good at retaining information and recalling events. I had thought that I had gotten better from the difficulties I had before I was diagnosed.

For the past 2 years, I'm having a really hard time remembering things. My life picked up quite a lot and lots of changes have occurred. I have to do a lot more things than I was always used to.

I am just wondering about your memory and how ASD affects it.

I'm not sure if ASD is the reason why my memory has become so bad. I usually can't remember things I've said or events from the day before. It really sucks. I'm also a lot more scattered, and can't focus like I used to. I'm having a lot of difficulty listening to people too, it's torturing to stand still and listen.

I don't remember when something happened, I won't know what happened yesterday and I will forget I put potatoes on stove 3 mins ago and that mom told me to do the laundry 2h ago(I wont even know if I already did it or not). I don't have sense of time and mundane tasks escape my mind easily.

But I have pretty good memory for trivia and knowledge. I can recall what I learned like a year ago or even 10 years ago if the knowledge from back then is currently required.

My memory seems like a spiderweb. It stays there and is pretty much invisible but when it "catches" something (a new information or a question related to an information) multiple connections light up at once and I can "pull" all the information related to the point it hit and go further, lighting up even more connections - as if I were pulling the spiderweb strings.

I have a pretty bad memory. Too much stuff going on in my head I suppose.

That's very similar to how my memory works! :)

I use to have a better memory as well, I've attributed it maybe wrongly to medications but I think being overwhelmed mentally makes things a lot harder to take in too.

Yep , me too , my GF thinks I do it on purpose i.e. forget important things and hang onto useless trivia for decades. I really cant choose what I remember.

I have a good memory for words, names (especially unusual and exotic ones), dates and facts. My memory for phone numbers, however, is terrible, unless it's one I call frequently.

I can generally remember if I told something to someone, but beyond that my memory is horrible.

I've been taking medication for decades, yet I will have days where I forget.

My memory is kind of scattered and disorganized, but it's extremely good at retaining some things such as exact shades of colours, sensory things such as smell (of a leaf rubbed on my skin for example when I was 9, weird smell of poppy petals...), all sorts of "screenshots" of past. I recognize many plants and minerals when I see them as their names naturally pop up in my head with no effort.

I do remember some disconnected facts well, but it's of no use as it all lacks structure. I remember many words in many languages, but - again - it doesn't mean I speak those languages.

I'm really good with remembering the date that this or this happened. And some people are like don't remember that or wow how do you remember that. I also remember things like logos well. But I have bad remembering things I don't like or care about doing. Like remembering to change the laundry or taking the trash out.

My memory is like Kiriae's except I think of it like a network instead of a spiderweb, and I think of it really literally. XD

I am the same, I remember interesting things I have learned from people or reading. I tend to be forgetful with doing things, and tend to be scattered with activities. I try to focus on one thing at a time but find it a lot harder nowadays. Mundane activities are really hard to finish.

Yea, I used to think medication gave me a bad memory for past stuff. I agree that being overwhelmed affects memory. I think my sensory issues cause me to miss a lot of what's going on with people around me, too.

I am very scattered too, and have information from random places I've collected. I think I do make some connections from different sources as well. I like what you said about screen shots, I have lots of short movies and pictures in my head from my childhood.

Before i moved to the US my memory was excellent. i was able to remember even the most insignificant details. As soon as i moved, though, my ability to retain memory has decreased. It might be because of me having to adapt to completely new surroundings, way out of my comfort zone. I hope that this will improve, because my memory used to be one of the things about myself i valued the most.
