I was diagnosed with what was/is Aspergers at 3.50 pm this afternoon, it feels strangely liberating. I went to a private ASD clinic in Chester to confirm what I already knew. They have already adopted DSM V and said that I was autistic, and that I had what was used to be called Aspergers Syndrome "in old money", which I though was a funny thing to say to someone she had just told was autistic. Anyway, now I know, good. It might have been nicer to have found out 30 years ago I have to say, but there you go. Its just nice to know that when I come so over loaded that I have to put myself to bed the minute I get in from work and might have to do that overnight for weeks, its not because I am a wimp, its because I am autistic.

Congratulations. People react differently to an ASD diagnoses but many do find it liberating.

Well I have had a nights sleep and half a day to digest the news, I am still good with it, even if it does not feel quite real. Its a real heavy weight off my shoulders to be honest.

Congratulations, I can imagine it is a weight off your shoulders.
I suppose if you have known for awhile you may well have come to terms with it previously and the diagnosis is the final confirmation.

Since having autism suggested to me by a couple of people in the mental health team, I reckon I've pretty much read everything there is to read about it on the internet. In the past 6 months I feel like I've been through all sorts of grief and acceptance over it, it's just now I'm constantly really worried about diagnosis in case the doctors don't believe me.

Are you from Or near Chester?
I am not too far away in Wrexham, and I have been looking at private diagnosis as the waiting list on the NHS here is four years+! !!

Would you mind if I PM'd you for some info like where you went for diagnosis and how much it cost?

Since you wanted the diagnosis, congratulations, but just be careful who you divulge too... there are a LOT of people out there who will think you are or aren't like this or that-- just because your label says SOME people are or aren't like this or that. Then you might get a false, negative reputation just from the label. Just be careful. :)

I didn't find my diagnosis liberating... I found mine humiliating for the above reason. And dehumanizing.

Why dehumanizing?

Because people didn't bother to get to know me as a person any more; they just read about AS "to get to know me better". Like my own damn mother, and some "professionals" too.
