I haven't done much research on this topic, but I'm wondering if a colic could be linked to autism. My neighbor and I both had severe colics when we were little, and we are both developmentally delayed and autistic. I was looking at the SPD checklist (link down below), and one of the symptoms in infants is a severe colic. I'm wondering if any of you had a colic when you were an infant, and if so, what are your thoughts? Do you think that a colic could be a potential indicator for developmental delays (not necessarily autism)? I could be completely wrong, but I'm wondering what you all think.

Link to SPD checklist: http://www.sensory-processing-disorder. ... klist.html
(It's in the "self-regulation" section by the way)

Truthfully, many babies with colic come out of it okay. I don't get the impression that colic, itself, is really linked to autism.

However, within the case studies that I used to read as a child, there were many children with regressive autism who manifested gastrointestinal dysfunction.

One of my first memories was the smell of vomit. I vomited constantly as a very young child.

I feel it's actually very plausible that gastrointestinal issues and autism could be linked in some way. The question is: Exactly how?

My neighbor and I ended up ok, but our parents got no sleep for the first 5-7 months of our lives. Sorry parents........ :D .

I don't think my neighbor had regressive autism, but it's possible. I feel like I showed signs from birth as well. The link between gastrointestinal difficulties and autism is very interesting :D .

I was told, as a toddler, that I would scream "all night for many nights."

My parents certainly got no sleep for a long time there!

I couldn't be soothed by anyone, to the point where my mom had to just let me cry because she couldn't comfort me lol. I would scream all night and all day. I also hated tummy time- probably because of the colic.

As I think of it, on the basis of my reading, and of my experiences, I would say it's possible that there is a "type" of autism which includes gastrointestinal difficulties as a "co-morbid."

I don't find that this is universal in autism, though. I find it to be at least fairly common, though.

That's too bad. I wish tummy-time would have been happier for you.

Tummy-time looks like it's quite comfy for babies, and it encourages them to explore their environment, and their own physical abilities.

I don't think, when I was a baby, that "tummy-time" was as prominent as it is now. But I feel it is natural, though, and makes lots of sense.

Of course- "typically" developing children can have gastrointestinal problems as well. It seems as if it is more common with autism in some cases. Wouldn't it be great if there was one simple symptom/test that could tell if a child is autistic or not? I guess it would stop all the confusion, but I wouldn't want people to get rid of their child just because they have an ASD. That would be horrible :( .

As for "tummy time", I would scream whenever I was placed on my stomach lol. My parents tried, but I wouldn't have it :D .

I find the whole concept of eugenics to be a horrible thing.

Many people with autism are able to lead productive lives. At the very least, they provide much joy to their families, and to people who know them.

I hate how Autism Speaks is trying to find a cure :( . I know some people hate having autism, but would you rather never be born? I don't like it when people choose to kill their children in the womb just because they have a disability.

You can't do that with autism, anyway.

There's no way one can conclude that a baby is autistic when he/she is in the womb.

And I hope it stays that way.

So far there's no way to tell :( . I can't imagine a world with no autistic people. I'm really hoping MSSNG (Autism Speaks' horrible project) fails.

I believe in the notion that there are "autisms," rather than one "autism."

Like I said, I don't believe one will ever be able to tell if a kid's autistic in the womb. Ever.

I think that as well. Autism is too complex and comes in so many forms. Autism Speaks is wasting their funding when they could actually be helping autistic people and their families. What a terrible organization :( .

I was very colicky but that proves nothing.

I don't think it proves much, but it could be linked to sensory/gastrointestinal issues, both of which are common with autism.
