Hello,

I was asked by a new publication to write an article about my experience with Savant Syndrome and the possibility of it being more prevalent than it is presently believed to be. I touched on Autism as well, but am considering touching on Autistic Savants in another article but figured that I'd post it here. Feedback/Comments welcome!

I don't find Savant Syndrome to be particularly common on WrongPlanet. There's quite a lot of very bright and even scholarly people on here, though.

The "prevalence" of Savant Syndrome, according to the results of my research ranges from "1 or 2 out of 200" people with autism, to as high as 10% of autistic people.

Yeah; I'm not a savant by any means :D . I still found the article interesting, though.

Thanks for the reply, would you mind sending me what you have dug up thus far? I've seen that statistic, but I haven't really pursued it yet.

I got some figures from "The Savant Syndrome: An Extraordinary Condition. A Synopsis, Past, Present, and Future." Their prevalence is stated to be based upon studies of people who are in institutions, primarily. This is an article which probably would be considered to have enough rigor in it to be "scholarly."

I don't know how to link articles to PM's.

Another is: "Extraordinary Minds: The Link Between Savantism and Autism," which is on a website known as "The Spectrum."

Part of the reason that I wonder about the prevalence of this condition is that savant abilities require the right environment in order to be realized. A frictionless environment is almost as important as the condition itself.
