UK’s first ‘quiet hour’ for autistic people to be held across 14 shopping centres next week
Quote:
There are 4,500 shops taking part in Autism Hour including Clarks, Sainsbury’s and Toys R Us.
The initiative is part of an awareness campaign by The National Autism Society in partnership with shopping centre owner Intu.
The autism-friendly hour will take place at Intu’s 14 shopping centres across the UK, including Lakeside in Essex and The Trafford Centre in Manchester.
“A National Autistic Society survey found that 64 percent of autistic people avoid going to the shops, and 28 percent have been asked to leave a public place for reasons associated with their autism,” said Mark Lever, Chief Executive at the National Autistic Society.
