I have a permanent disabled parking placard for my autism. I am very unaware of my surroundings. I don’t have a real sense of danger. I will walk straight out in front of cars. My sensory perceptions also alter how I process information. Does anyone else have these issues and have a permanent disabled parking placard for autism?

I am okay with day to day things but there is no way I could drive, there are just too many variables. When ever I drove race cars and things like that as a kid I always crashed.

I walk into doors and walls and cut bread with parts of my fingers... if I have to count on my sight. When I touch things, I start to be perfectly aware of their position and my position relative to them. So I can climb, I can use stairs in pitch black - but did not learn to drive a car yet.

So what justification you provide when you applied for the placard?

And how is it useful since you don't drive?

We put "autism" on the placard application and that I need it because I can't walk without the aid of another person. This is because I am unaware of my surroundings and the further away we park, the more chance I could get hit by a car. You don't have to drive to use a parking placard. It's for closer proximity to the door and reduces the chance I get hit if I suddenly bolt into traffic.
