Hi

Sometimes I see something is off in someone’s face. It’s different than usual. But I can’t pinpoint what is wrong. But I do see something is wrong.

Who also has that? (The ability to see that something is off but not knowing what)

I think you mean seeing certain cues, or expressions on a person's face, but not understanding really what they are or what they mean. Is that it? If that is what you are talking about, then I have indeed experienced this before, especially in the past when I couldn't "read" social cues.

I know what you mean. A facial expression might make a person seem sad, perturbed, irritated, or something....but it's so subtle that it's hard to pinpoint.

Yes, that's happened to me. I'm better at it than I used to be---but, in the old days, I couldn't tell subtle changes in facial expression at all. It was a "learned" thing in me, rather than something "intrinsic."

Does it make you feel bad in any way when you notice these things?

Yes that’s what I mean. Sometimes I see something in someone’s face. But I don’t know what emotion it is. But I do have the ability to see a difference. I thought people with Asperger couldn’t do that. But I can. The only thing is that I don’t always know what’s wrong.

Yes because I always think people are angry. So it makes me feel bad. And then when I ask , they say “no I am just tired”.

Yes I do get that. I tend to keep myself to myself when I notice it because I always think it must be because of something I've done.

Yes exactly. And that’s why I get sad about it. But I thought “well I do see a difference so I guess I am not that autistic”. But I don’t always know why when the emotion is subtle. And I tend to think they are angry because of me.

I don’t have anyone else to talk about this. That’s why I come here for my questions .. I am diagnosed with autism but I still don’t have any help. I am on a waiting list for a guidance programme. But till then I have nowhere to go. So sorry for all the questions I ask.

Well don't apologise for asking questions, especially when something is playing on your mind.

But when you do notice that thing with peoples faces, it's probably nothing to do with you.

Asperger's is not an "inability," say, to notice subtle nuances in facial expression. It is, perhaps, a "lesser ability" to notice subtle nuances in facial expression.

Some of what comes natural to non-autistic people has to be learned by autistic people.

I totally get this. I have trouble discerning the difference between sad, angry, frustrated and tired faces. There is a test called the Reading the Mind in the Eyes test by Baron-Cohen which tests a persons ability to do just this.I sucked at this test.
