My niece was recently diagnosed by an independent psychologist with Autism. Her mom is an amazing single mom that is trying to do everything she can to make her daughter's school and life as productive and enjoyable for her as she can. My niece's school, though, is being very difficult though. They are not really willing to help.

Basically, I joined this forum to ask for your advice. My sister has to meet for some meeting with the school where she has to state what accommodations she wants made. My niece is high functioning, but she has a very tough time with social interactions and has some issues with reading and remembering basic math functions. She's in the 2nd grade.

What do you recommend be requested by her school that they can realistically accommodate? I live in Kentucky if that matters. Thank you for any help.

Can the psychologist who diagnosed her give advice?

I know that in my diagnosis, my psychologist explicitly states that he is available for consultation if required for any accommodations I might need at work. Presumably, the same would be even more applicable for schools.

It seems strange that a parent, who is not an expert in Autism, would be expected to best know what accommodations would be necessary at school. I would expect that the psychologist would be giving advice to both the parent and the school.

My sister was able to get extra time on tests and take them in the resource room if needed. She also had notes printed out for her by her teachers. She went to the speech\language pathologist for help with reading and language arts assignments.
