Hello, I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem too and what may be causing it.

When trying to learn about most subjects and do research on it via reading up on a certain subject or watching videos about it, I usually have great difficulty taking in, understanding and remembering the information and facts about the subject which is extremely annoying when I enjoy learning and find many subjects extremely interesting and want to learn about them for my own enjoyment only to forget key facts and information seconds or minutes later. I could spend hours researching only to realize at the end that I haven't actually learned much. Recently I have been watching documentaries and reading about the American revolution, Scientology and dianetics. I find them interesting but get frustrated because I struggle to take in what I have learned for example key people, events and why they happened, theories, dates and so on. The only way I can get past the issue is if watching a documentary on the American revolution for example, I can keep a pen and paper with me and when important facts and information is shown, I will pause it and write it down then repeat and this way I take it in, remember the information and learn. Also when I was reading up on Scientology, I would often stop after a paragraph, then read the paragraph again sometimes out loud, scroll back to the start and pick out all the most important facts, read them and then continue where I was and that helps too. I had this problem in school with every subject where I couldn't take in what the teacher was saying so I gave up trying to learn and started messing about instead. The only thing I'm an expert in is identifying historic artifacts and coins for people as I do a lot of metal detecting and have no trouble learning this skill.

I also recently found out I can hold, remember and understand information much much better after drinking alcohol. I felt down a few nights ago so i drank some vodka to the point of feeling tipsy and then went and done some research on British history and found I didn't have much of a problem taking in all what I was reading which is odd

I have similar issues. I tend to make lists if I think I want to try and remember it. I find if I’m super interested in something I remember it easier. Or il take measures to try and remember it. Make list in phone etc. I wish my memory was better I feel if it was my knowledge of subjects would be a lot greater.

The OP was so long I couldn't even read it. Talk about problems holding and remembering information if you can't get the information in the first place.

Yeah, paragraphs help.

But speaking of memory, mine is shocking. I'm currently studying an online software testing course and I'm pretty sure I will have to do it twice in order for the information to sink in. Even my ADHD medication is not helping me concentrate.

In short, to me it's boring. I've contacted my mentor to ask if I'm doing ok. Hope I am.

What you described happens to me. I love history but quickly forget most details. If I'm so interested that I go over it over and over I retain a lot more. But even then there are names, dates and details I don't remember or they get muddled.

My life. My whole life and I am fed up with it!!

5 failed college courses, all of which I've dropped out of before I could finish because of these difficulties. And being around people who can just remember stuff with zero effort just makes me feel s**t.

Yes, I struggle massively with this and it has affected my schoolwork. I have almost no free recall ability. I could study for hours and still not remember things. I learned eventually that it was because of a lesion on my left hippocampus that prevented it from working, and I subsequently got an NVLD diagnosis. If you don’t have a diagnosis of that, maybe you should look into it.

I apologize for my lack of paragraphs. Will try remember to use them next time and sorry for rambling on, I tend to do that sometimes

I've gotten so bad that they've treated me for dementia with Alheimer's medications. Currently they ascribe it to a functional cognitive disorder rather than Asperger's.

Sorry to hear that. I did very badly in school because of it. All d's c's and f's. I know the feeling. The only thing I was good at and even best in class was food technology in school and catering in college.

I have researched NLD and It could be possible as I saw problems understanding maths as a common symptom of it and I have huge issues with maths, I just don't understand anything to do with numbers. But on the other hand the symptoms of AS and NLD seem to be so similar it's hard to say. I was diagnosed with Aspergers at age 4 but wondering if I could have NLD as a co morbid condition

I have a lot of problems remembering things, always forget where I put certain things.
If I need these things I simply ask myself where I would put it and since I know myself, the thing is always there.
This solves so many problems.
Does anyone have a similar system?

I envy you. Countless times I have gone for something in a place where I would put it if I were me and it's not there   :| usually I find the item in an unusual place... or I never find it at all and spend many nights struggling to get to sleep because I still can't find said item.

I don't have this problem myself as I'm an extremely neat, tidy and organised person. In my room everything is kept neat and spotless and everything has a specific place where it must stay when not in use and put back in it's place when i have used it. I do this so that way I can't loose anything.
