Is there any protection that I can use in my living room that I can still hear the TV? I guess I can put on my headphones when I’m listening to music, but I have a case on my iPad, my headphones won’t fit

For the iPad you can use wireless earphones or headphones. You can probably do the same for the TV, but I'm not sure how... The Apple store can and will help you select one, plus set it up for the iPad

Some earphones will block out unsafe sounds and still allow normal voice, including the TV to pass through.

and

Surefire Ear Pros

I use both of these products for shooting competitions and they work well. Blocks out gunfire, but I can still hear people talking.

I also use the Surfire Ear Pros in a factory almost daily. With them on, it's similar to being in a office setting (w/out ear protection) while on the factory floor.

DownBeats are pretty handy for toning down loud sounds without totally blocking everything. The keychain case is handy and holds up very well too.

If it's just a matter of your headphone plug not fitting in the socket with the case on, maybe a slim audio jack extender would work.
