Throughout WP threads about school, most people talk about having been bullyied. I am wondering if it is different now for young people in school with social media. Do you get bullied as much in person as we did? Do you get singled out to be cyberbullied, or has social media equalized the playing field? It looks like to me on the outside that everybody bullies absolutely everybody on every part of the social spectrum, so I'm wondering if you still feel especially targeted?

Cyber-bulling is one of the reasons I'm glad I'm not still in high school.

With social media having become as popular as it is today, there's no denying that cyberbullying has become an increasingly common issue along with it. In fact, I dare argue that "physical" bullying is less common as opposed to cyberbullying. For some youngsters - not all by any means, but still a depressingly high number of them - their self-esteem is essentially tied to social media, which, in turn, can hurt their self-esteem when they end up getting cyberbullied. Or worse yet, it can destroy their mental health.

For this reason, I'm an advocate of keeping kids away from social media until they're strong and mature enough to handle it. Parents shouldn't let their children develop such an unhealthy attachment to social media. But alas, that seems an impossible feat to many.

When I was growing up, the bullies were the kids who eventually got in trouble with the police later on in life. Today, with the advent of social media, virtually everyone can be a victim or perpetrator of bullying. I'm glad I'm not going to school today.

I never understood cyber bullying. What are kids doing with cell phones in school, I would just take the phone away and change their darn number and not have them give their number away to other kids. About social media, block block block and set your profile to private and turn off messaging for people who are not your friends and don't accept any friends requests from anyone you don't know. This is what I would do as a parent for my child. Kids do not need social media. "But mom they are saying bad things about me behind my back." Me: "So what, they would still do it even without the computer. They would still be calling each other on their phones and talking about you or or sitting together at lunch and do it or do it at a mall or in their own house or in a park. The only difference is we all have texting now and social media."

A lot of things you can solve with setting privacy or blocking users on social networks or don't use social networks with your real name. But if someone makes some ridiculous video in school and put in youtube and show it all world or edit some photo in photoshop, this isn't same like saying bad thinks behind your back. It is better to take it seriously, if your child have problems with bullying in school.
