Quote:
Giving children aged between one and six mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, without exercising any control can make them vulnerable to mental disorders and “pseudo-autism”.
Early Childhood Education specialist Dr Putri Afzan Maria Zulkifli said “pseudo autism” was similar to autism, whereby children lacked social skills and seemed to live in their own world.
She said this could happen if children spent too much time playing with the mobile devices and watching television.
“Age one to six is a critical time in the development of children’s neurons, but when there is a lack of physical activity and interaction, it impedes the growth of their brain which should grow up to 90% during the period,” she told Bernama after appearing as a guest on the Nine11 programme broadcast on the Bernama News Channel here today.
She said neurons which were not fully developed or utilised would die, thus creating various complications for the children involved.
Putri Afzan said apart from “pseudo autism”, other complications which could occur include a failure to think sanely, having no creative thinking, being unable to interact and speak well, besides impeding the development of emotions and the intellect.
“In a worst case scenario, it will put these children into a situation where they are unable to control their feelings or stress, causing depression,” she said.

Just when you think you have heard it all :?

Lots of small children are given iphones and ipods these days. I think these gadgets are more for adults and teenagers. Children should be running about outside or playing with toys.

Mind you, so many people these days prefer to be staring at their phones rather than interacting with other people in the room. I'm on my phone a lot when I'm on my own, but when I'm in company I don't use my phone at all. There's a girl at work who just cannot live without her phone nor her music, and she's an outgoing NT. When you talk to her, she is hardly making eye contact with you because she's always staring at her phone. And this is what a lot of young people are like now. So, yeah, I'm not saying it causes autism, but technology can make NTs act autistic from the way they cannot be parted from a gadget. And it's not just socialising they do on their phones either, it's games, ebay purchasing, app downloading, pop music, etc etc.

Some things never change. When I was a kid adults were always moaning that we watched too much TV and we needed to get outside and run around in the fresh air. Actually I could be doing anything I enjoyed, like drawing or reading or playing alone with my toys, but if I was doing it indoors my mother would growl at me to go outside. And then I'd be sitting out on the doorstep on a cold grey afternoon with nowhere to go and nothing to do, freezing my buns off. And I wasn't the type of kid who ran around for no reason. If I were a kid doing that today they'd put me on Ritlalin in a hurry.

I must really have the psuedo autism.

Oh boy, "pseudo-autism."

But there are so many counterarguments I hear on a regular basis as to why kids aren't outside as much as they were back in the day. They could get kidnapped! Playground equipment is so dirty! Kids who haven't been vaccinated are roaming everywhere!

Basically, you're just supposed to put the kid in a bubble.

Kids being on gadgets all the time is certainly likely to have negative consequences.

But some are going on about it like any exposure is 'detrimental' ect...it is probably good for kids to be familiar with tablets and smartphones at a young age. The problem is if the parent just hands them a phone/ipad whenever they need entertainment...but I don't understand how people don't know that. I mean really, most of todays parents are clueless that kids need activities outside of that? Or is this one of those kind of false alarm epidemics...though if it really is a widespread problem they need to start putting out public service announcements I suppose.

Also its not pseudo-autism, that is a stupid term to use.

A lot of those just sound like excuses, not actual counter arguments. Kidnapping is certainly a risk but if anything I'd think it might be less risk because a lot of kids carry phones so they might be able to call or text someone for help. Or if the phone is dropped it can be tracked down so they can at least get a starting point to search...plus tons of people receive amber alerts on their phone so if they see the described kidnapper and/or vehicle they can call it in. Though kids also can get kidnapped if they are at home I suspect much of the time kidnapping is done by someone the family knows or another family member.

How broad a definition they use the word "expert" for.

I also played Atari and NES and arcade games as a kid. So basically if it's technological and kids like it, it will rot their brains and send them straight to hell, where they will drink naught but burning hot coal and drink naught but burning hot cola.

Oh, and I guess watching The Simpsons must have added to my "defectiveness" as well.

You can't become autistic from these devices, but people certainly can look foolish.

The author of the article wasn't literally talking about autism. "Pseudo-autism" sounds like it was meant to be analogy.

Many same "experts" thought that Bart Simpson himself made kids disrespectful and rebellious to authority, maybe as well with "pseudo-ADHD" :P

I have seen many adults that can't seem to interact without playing on their phones. These adults can't make it through church without their phones going off at some point during the service. I have seen people answering texts and calls during church services. I also find it irritating to be with a person that insists on answering phone calls while I am with them. I hate it when I am talking with someone and they start playing on their phones and they aren't really paying attention to our conversation.

Most of the kids at my work have tablets, smartphone, and/or gaming systems. The parents of these kids rely heavily on the technology to entertain their kids so they don't have to pay attention to them. Many parents are over protective and won't let their kids play in dirt or run around with neighborhood kids. Many of my kids have difficulty interacting with each other because they aren't allowed to be kids. My kids are overly hyper in the classroom because they don't get to move around much and there are a lot of things that they can't do on the playground because the school is afraid of lawsuits.

It says inability to think creatively, but we are known to be more creative than NTs.
