So, I just came out on Facebook as autistic and replied to a classmate in an email indicating I’m autistic. I just got tired of “hiding”. We’ll see how it goes. I’ve already had a couple of posts of support including a childhood friend who indicated he’s on the spectrum as well (I already figured it out, in retrospect). I know that things will not go perfect, but I just got tired of trying to be NT all of the time. It’s not like I’m going to just show all of my autistic traits or something, just not try SO hard to be NT.

It was very brave of you to do that in a world that hates autism, especially on Facebook.

Brave or stupid or both. We’ll see! Thanks for the support man, it’s appreciated!

Congratulations! I some ways the ASD community is like another group that once represented a small percentage of the population that came "out" and refused to go back "in". That group has been able to secure legal protections as well as a substantial degree of acceptance. Society just needs to figure out that we are here and are tired of hiding.

I also did it, and I had to exclude several "friends" who were stupid with me, I congratulate them for the courage, we all deserve it.

Thanks for the support, all! A few of my Facebook friends are in my physical therapy program, and I already got a "heart" from one of them. Word should spread pretty quickly. I have 2 weeks left in my clinical for physical therapy. It'll be interesting to see how quickly word travels.
