I've been noticing being sensitive to some smells recently and remembering the same from before. Well I'm not sure if it's "sensitivities" or just... bothering me I guess. I'm wondering for those of you who notice smells a lot or can't stand smells have experience with different types of masks?
I'm hesitant about medical masks because I think they don't look good in public (in fact I generally very much dislike them in public), and also I don't know if they help with smells. I know there are different patterned or coloured masks that aren't just white/blue, but I'm still not a fan of them.
I know there are also other masks (like Vog and similar things). Again, I want to know about the smell part, also I don't know if I need something so ____ (blanking on the word I'm looking for) for just something like smells and not exactly for pollutants and allergens and stuff.
And then I also wonder about just making something out of fabric, but again smell and how it would look.

I don't know, this post didn't come out how it was supposed to but I don't know. I'm just wondering.

It depends on what type of smell you are trying to block. Most molecules that make up smells are smaller in size than pollution or pollen, so a medical fabric type mask will not help much or at all. To totally remove smells from the air you will need filters suitable for organic vapours, what a person would use if they were spray painting, so something more similar to a military gas mask rather than a surgeon's mask. I think you need to find an alternative solution, these masks are not really that comfortable to wear and will definitely attract attention.

I use some fabric masks with activated carbon "PM 2.5" filters. They don't do much but I found they block about 50% of the cigarette smell and such if they are tight enough. I can still smell it but it's not as strong as without the mask.

BTW. Careful with masks - some of them give off a smell worse than any smell out there. :D

I'm pretty sure there are some people who just wear regular surgical masks but I don't see how those would help too much since they're not sealed.

I want to hear from people who wear masks

Sensitivity to smell is actually something that I've been thinking about for the last few days, odly enough. I have light and sound sensitivity, but almost no sensitivity to smell. I figured it is due to a sinus surgery I had as a kid that messed my sense of smell up.

As for wearing a mask, finding one that will eleminate organic vapors, as neilson_wheels pointed out, might difficult, if you don't want to attrack a lot of attention while wearing it in public.

I did see an alternative on Youtube a short while ago that you might be interested in. I think it's called thera-putty or something to that effect. It's a kneadable putty with roughly the consistency of playdough which is scented. I think it's ment for stimming but it might help alleviate some of the overpowering negative smells you run in to?

As far as masks goes 3M makes an odor blocking mask that looks more like what you would see someone who is spray painting something wear at right around the $10.00 price range.

You know, I think I've found something that might work for me, if I end up getting a mask. Respro masks seem good and they're sold at MEC here, which is good because we dont generally buy things online and also it's cheaper than online I believe? It's obviously not a super cheap mask but for me the type of Velcro strap it has seems a little less weird than surgical masks. Anyway, I might but a cheap mask and test that out first and then see about getting a Respro one. Also the website says that it should help with odours. I want it for smells that don't bother other people but I very much dislike, not very strong.

If anyone uses any type of mask I would love to hear.

Not what natural mask allergies do so you do not worry too much
