This is the 1st time someone has actually told me I didnt look autistic to my face. I cant deal with that on this great friday.

I was walking to my first class and it was a project work period, so I went to the learning support room. Its quiet there. Some guy asked me why I was there. I told him I was working on a project. He said I didnt seem to need extra support because I was getting good grades in that class. I told him that I did and that it was none of his business. I got good grades because of the extra support. He then told me that he had Dyslexia and asked me what I had. I dont really mind telling people. I told him I had ADHD and Autism. Then some girl came over and just said "You look too good to be autistic". Ugh. I want to educate people

It's an invisible "disability". To me autism isn't a disability, even more so it is a super power, I am different, so what? Despite all that, I wish people would believe that I have autism.

Looking to good to be autistic. What does that even mean? I've known severely autistic people who look "normal." And besides which, both of them were out of line. They don't know what your life is like.

To me AS is a disability but the more people say I look normal the more complimented I feel because I WANT to look normal. But people still need to be educated on what's going on on the inside of someone, rather than just looking at what's on the outside.

It would be nice if everyone were more knowledgeable about autism. But that does not mean the burden of educating them falls on each and every autistic person. We have the right to disclose or not disclose, on a case by case basis.

Yeah. Im proud of who I am sometimes. Some people in my regular classes know I am Autistic or they know I am a bit different. I want more people to know about it. My younger sister also has told some of her friends so that they knew.

"Someone legit told me" means "someone actually told me", not that the person is necessarily legit.

The good news is that it sounds like that girl was flirting with you.

The bad news is ...yes...she is REALLY ignorant.

Or she must be if she meant literally "your facial features are too handsome". Don't wanna put down Down's syndrome people (some at quite cute), but Downs syndrome folks look quite distinct from NTs, and many NTs still often confuse autism with Down's syndrome. But unlike DS folks autistic folks are quite non distinct and normal looking and can even "have quite handsome features"( I remember experts commenting on us being 'handsome' in the media ever since I first heard about autism in the media when I was a kid in the sixties. Before I even knew I was on the autism spectrum myself.).

But if she meant "you don't look like an absent minded slob, and are too well groomed and dressed to be autistic" then that's a little less obtuse of her because if that's her stereotype about us then it has some basis in truth.

Ever changing slang.

I would have said "someone flat out said XYZ to me". But I guess young folks today say "legit" for "flat out", or "in your face".

I agree that the word "legit" sounded like an adjective for the person (like they were a qualified mental health worker who was "legit"). But it was an adverb for how the person said what they said.

I hate it when people use 'legit' in a sentence like the title of this thread! It makes the sentence sound flawed.

Most autistic people don't "look" autistic.

Most people with ADHD don't "look" ADHD.
