I know you are in rough times. Has to be difficult when you don't think your friends are sincere.

Thank you. And I believe in myself very much. It's just that sometimes that is just not enough. If no one else believes you you might not end up having enough resources to make it. Even my disability lawyer who has been working my case for over a year now and who knows everything about me and my situation told me the other day that she had not realized how dire my situation is. And she still doesn't even after I keep telling her things over and over. She literally told me recently to leave the job I just managed to get and get another one because my job is not treating me right. She knows I am completely unemployable and getting and keeping jobs is impossible for me.

This is one of the issues with being so high functioning. We have a few threads open now with this recurring theme because a lot of people are feeling it. You can believe in yourself all you want but if no one else really believes you because you are high functioning and appear capable even though your are not, they will expect things of you that you can't do and keep denying you the help and resources that you so desperately need to do what you need to do. After a few decades of this, you are no longer able to sustain it.

I'm in a leaky boat of sorts too. I only meant to help as I know how it feels.

I wanted to cheer you up. I'm on your side.

(((Skibum)))

I have found this to be true. That saying, "You can do anything you set your mind to," is inaccurate. If others are intent on telling you that you can't (or shouldn't-this is the word I was told most often) do something, it becomes very hard and progress is frustratingly slow. It also sounds insincere if people say it but don't do anything to follow through.

plus that saying is very trite as we don't all have the same abilities or access to the same resources.

Executive function problems make it hard enough to get past the "set my mind on it" stage sometimes, never mind the "doing" bit.

Best wishes, skibum. I've been doing the rounds of assessments for support myself lately after my own decades of trying to sustain things under my own steam. I know how frustrating it can be when every gateway to support seems to be guarded by someone that you just can't get through to, even the ones who are genuinely trying to help. I hope you get the support that you are being made to work so hard to obtain for yourself.

I’m close to 5 foot 5 and 57 years old. Very similar to ASpartOfMe.

Can relate.

I hope you don’t lose sight of your fine qualities, SkiBum.

Yes, words are extremely powerful and people don't understand that sometimes things like that statement can be very discouraging. People don't often realize that just the fact that I, and many of us, are alive and have been for so long in this condition is a testimony that we do do what we set our minds to. Just the fact that we are surviving situations that many others could not means that we are doing everything we can possibly do all the time. And that is extremely exhausting.

Big hugs to you

I'm sorry that people don't understand your struggles. I think you're right; even if you don't seem to be accomplishing big things in others' eyes, it's courageous just to keep going in difficult situations. Keep being strong, and I hope you find people who support you. I appreciate your insights into autism on this forum.
