hello!

so i got my diagnosis for autism in mid-february. in the report they wrote about me, they mentioned that my aversion to having my photo taken was abnormal and indicated that i was on the spectrum. does anyone else have this feeling towards cameras? i avoid them like the plague. it makes my skin crawl when i see myself in photos, even if you can't see my actual face. i haven't willingly taken a picture of myself in six years.

Yes i hate getting photos taken too. I have bad posture and look plain ugly in photos. I hate when people who are so pretty and photogenic FORCE me to take photos.

Having my photo taken is at least as uncomfortable as looking someone in the eye for me. There is no specific reason I just feel extremely uncomfortable and cant' stand seeing myself. It probably doesn't help I have prosopagnosia so it's strange to see a face I know is mine but can't recognize it.

Wow! I didn't know prosopagnosia could make your own face unrecognizable.

Same here, I've gotten better about it but I still hate it. I have made my family pay me before a picture many times before.

Hate having my photo taken. I also hate it if a stranger is taking a photo and I happen to be in the bachground... I usually put my hands in front of my face.

Count me in. I've hated having my picture taken since I was a child, and it shows in all the childhood photos of me that still exist.

Even in adulthood there are only about four pictures of myself that I like, and I'm wearing sunglasses in one of them.

I do sometimes wonder if it's only to ourselves that we appear awful in photos though; it's possible other people don't notice the awkwardness we see in pics of ourselves.

Nope, I don't like my photograph taken. It's not that I think I look plain bad... I don't recognize myself in photographs, except for the fact that the guy in the photograph is wearing the same clothes that I typically wear myself.

It's even worse if I look at myself in the mirror. There is abseloutely nobody in the world that's harder to make eye contact with than... myself. If I look at myself in the mirror, I find who I see to look so darn terrifying that I have to look away after a few seconds. I mean, I'm rather tall and big, but still it's a bit wierd...

Nope, nope and nope. I've never liked getting my photograph taken and I've only had one selfie in my entire life and I hated it. I can't understand those people who take a selfie a day and throw it up on Instagram as if it were the most important thing to do that entire day.

It's vanity run amok and I have no interest in this whatsoever.

I don't like it either. And it had nothing to do with what and how I look, or that whether I recognize myself...

Though somehow somewhere at the 'recognizing' part, I feel like I'm seeing someone else, and not 'me'. Even if I'm aware of the memory of doing whatever it was shown. But that's not the reason why I don't like my pictures taken.

I just don't like it. Because I don't like announcing my existence to anyone, along with the idea showing where I was and what I was doing. Not even a selfie where only I can see and do anything with it.
Though if I do any selfies at all, my face is not usually fully shown.

Oddly enough, I didn't had that issue when I was younger. Back then, I took even ridiculous lengths to be included in a picture.

I don't like it nor does my (very) neurotypical friend. It's not so bad though if I am not recognisable as in my avatar.

I used to intensely dislike it, but I found a solution.

Basically, my wife and I decided, from the day we moved together, to take a daily photo of us two together. Not for an SNS or anything, just for our personal memories. We sometimes do it on trips or journeys, but mostly it's just a timer at home in the apartment. At first I was very self-conscious about everything ... how we/I looked, what I felt at the time, etc., but after we took a round of bad shots for a week or two but still continued because, well, we promised, I started to be less self-conscious and, after some 400 shots, I began to enjoy the thing. I guess this is how movie stars get that Hollywood smile -- they just have to do it ten-thousand times.

Having done this for nearly 2 years now, I don't have a problem with photos being taken of me. I just look into that lens, smile, and move on to the next thing.

I wonder if there's a similar fix for eye contact ...

yep, cant avoid it when there are alot of people around with their phones, even though they're not aimed at you, I still feel like i'm included in the picture. also when my relatives like to take pics with their phones they always take photos of me when i least expect and later put it in an album and they just laugh about it later. Maybe they want something to remember me by or just addicted to taking pics. also never taken a selfie so if u haven't join the club.

I don't like taking pictures that much but I'm more concerned with where the pictures are going because many times when you let someone take your picture, you're also agreeing to what they do with it as well.
