I am close to being done with school, but for the past few gym classes I have been having some.....er....shall we say issues with my current gym (PE) teacher. I have been receiving poor grades in her class while I put forth my best effort, have my uniform, do the warm-up while nobody else does, help to clean up, etc. I interrogated her about this last class, and she said, "Must have been because of effort." So, during the next gym class, I made sure to give my best effort that I possibly could. I even managed to get someone out in the game we were playing, which is extremely rare for me. Yet I received yet another 80%. I then sent this teacher an email explaining this, and she gave me 1 point back. I am getting very annoyed with the whole situation, as I have no idea what I am doing wrong and she seems to not want to tell me. I have explained to her that I also don't have the best motor skills in the world, and that this may affect what seems like a lack of effort, but she is still adamant about my scores.

Any advice as to what I should do? Physical Education is supposed to be graded solely on effort at my school, not athletic ability, and this is reflected by my other gym teachers where I always score well. I just really don't enjoy being told my performance was subpar while I work my hardest :? .

Can you talk to your dean or advisor about this?

^^It's going alright. Not the best year with these teachers, but I'm going to be leaving next year anyway :D .

I could probably talk to the advisor, but I don't think it is necessary to drag them into this when gym is almost over, and when there are more drastic things going on that require intervention than a biased PE teacher.

Well that's just it. Your performance was subpar while trying your hardest. Not your fault and yes unfair. However, in my experience PE teachers are sticklers for their standards and effort just isn't enough to them. You may just have to accept a B.

Bullying, Harassment, Drugs, etc.

We’ve had around 4 kids go to jail.

Yeah, I get that. I just really don’t know what I am doing wrong and I can’t stand the injustice. I wish there was such a thing as “bridges/learning support” gym....

Where are you going to school after this school?

How is your music coming along?

I’m off to high school :D . I’m quite excited.

My music is going well; thanks for asking! I played a solo yesterday at an adjudicated performance and it went great! I am also joining marching band next year and playing marimba.

Can you get your doctor to write a letter for you saying that you are not physically capable of doing what the other kids can do and that you should not be judged by the same standards?

When I was in gym class at school (is it really 23 years since I did gym class at at school?!), grades were mostly based on participation and effort, but there was an athletic ability component as well.

Basically, if the teacher was convinced you were giving it your best, you could probably count on getting B's. But if you wanted an A, you had to actually do relatively well at the various sports.

I got B's all the way through.
:D

On one hand, 80% is 80%, regardless of why it's given. But, what I think sucks far more than the number is that you really are giving it your best and your teacher won't believe you.
:(

Thanks for the reply.^^^^^

Yeah, that is what I am really upset about. I am the worst person in the class at all sports, but I always try my best. :|

Are you going to a specialized high school for music?

4 kids going to jail in a middle school....something reality needs to be done!

Not specialized in music, but apparently the marching band is one of the best in the country.

That’s what I think! It is ridiculous.

That physical education grade will have zero effect on your life. I can understand how you feel, though. It’s the principle of the thing.

Have you thought about specializing in biology, perhaps taking AP courses in biology and other subjects?

I hope you do take AP courses.
