I have always tried to have the best ideas in my field, expecting them to be appreciated on merit. Now, I suspect that I have been hobbled not only by less advanced ideas being promoted vigorously, but by a basic inability of people to evaluate ideas. Maybe my first clue should have been the way school elections were handled by papering the halls instead of just having debates.
When I consider making efforts to "sell" my ideas, I feel like a trickster bouncing someone out of their natural course, even if it was a rut. I also get into conflicts with competing promoters. Should I give up and consider that everyone needs to make their own mistakes?

In answer to your title question, yes, in reality as you know this is not true.

I could be wrong, I thought I read a post form you that recommended persuading others to believe they had come up with the idea themselves. I have also tried this route in the past, in my experience this works for a while but eventually erodes a persons confidence and is ultimately unsatisfactory. I'm constantly amazed that marketing is successful but advertising budgets seem to prove me wrong.

I think you need to find someone who does marketing. Public relations or PR as it is popularly known is a big thing these days. If you could work out some deal with them where you only paid them on results, you would be alright.

My attitude there was more "let them take credit." People are always stealing ideas by being inspired by another's work without quite understanding it until they see how it fits their own application. I try not to diminish their enthusiasm by claiming priority; I'm OK with helping them refine "their" idea.
I've seen how advertising works, primarily by pushing buttons for various reactions that work in our favour in non-commercial life.

That was my basic life plan, as recommended by my techie heroes. However, PR people only expect to get paid if somebody gets rich, but I was more into co-ops and theoretical work.

That's a better approach than what I suggested. Collaboration is a wonderful experience with the right people involved.
