autism doesn't equal naive and deaf

Just because a person has autism and isn't a chatty kathy, doesn't mean we don't know what's going on around us. My sister and I were nonverbal until we were around 4 years old or so. People thought that meant that my sister and I didn't know what was happening around us. We may not have been verbal when we were little, but we knew when we weren't wanted and we noticed it when people were mean to us. We are still on the quiet side for the most part, but we still are completely aware of how people treat us and talk about us like we aren't there.

Have people made these assumptions about you?

Doctors, clinicians, whoever used to talk about me like I wasn't able to hear or understand them. Even to this day someone might have to say "he can hear you" if they start saying something about me.

Even someone like me who could clearly communicate, listen, or even know terms more complex than adults trice my age then.
Let alone who doesn't seem like it. Whether they do explicitly stated that we can hear and understand, or not.

My mom caught on somewhat that she won't talk about my case to anyone in front of me.
Yet, she isn't all-aware that I can still hear other things from afar and from others. Or sense from someone else that they knew my case without my consent.

Then there's my funny habit of eavesdropping on random occasions. Some would talk about confidential stuff in front of me. I could even go in front of them, and have the entire room ignore my presence because of such assumption.
