When I was a kid I liked animals in the sense that I liked to observe and mess with them (nicely... lol) to see how they react to things. Maybe it's just from having trouble recognizing my emotions, but the dog we've had since I was a kid I believe I was actually somewhat indifferent towards until I got older, and I mostly just liked playing with her and seeing her do things. Though now that I'm an adult I get very emotionally attached to animals, probably easier than I do to people.

I like animals a lot! Love them. I only hurt them if they attack me. I hate having to hurt animals.
My brother had to kill one of our male ducks because he started attacking. Brother knows how to humanely kill them as he worked on a farm and has also been shown how etc... But we are far to soft so will only do it if we really have to.
I sometimes cry if I see ants or a spider being killed, or even a fly! Other times if a mosquito or horsefly tries to bite me I may not take too kindly to it! I would rather that they didn't try to use me for their breakfast!

Love them, although some animals scare me. My parents got me a cat when I was 13. I had a more meaningful connection with that cat than with the rest of my family. Nowadays I'm vegan because I don't wanna eat or otherwise harm animals.

Love, love, LOVE animals. Cats in particular. I have a trail camera (motion sensitive) set up in the woods near my home and I've gotten videos of foxes (made me think of sly!), raccoons, coyote, deer, and even the occasional bear. I like seeing them in their own habitat. Even though the raccoons and foxes try to eat my chickens from time to time, I understand why and I forgive them.

I didn't treat my gran's lovely Springer Spaniel Peter as well as I ought - as a small kid growing up I had this crazy idea that he was "ugly". He died when I was still a young kid and had decided to start being kinder to him. But he was a smart dog and I think he understood me.

I loved reading about animals in my story books and comics,m and preferred reading about them than people.

I've loved all animals since then. In 2006 I was staying in a homeless shelter and found a tiny puppy a few weeks old living with some people in a rundown shack behind a pub. It was winter and he came walking towards me as if he'd chosen me. I managed to rescue him by paying them a small sum (I suspect he was stolen as there were no siblings or mother in sight) and he became my emotional support animal at a low point of my life, during PTSD and two years before I was diagnosed ASD. Benji my beloved Miniature Pinscher left me just over a year ago following kidney problems and I still miss him dearly.

Animals are wonderful. They don't judge us and attention and love are more precious to them than even their physical needs.

I have been through vegetarian phases and could easily do so again. Some months ago in the supermarket chickens were on special and I had put one in my trolley. Then I saw the blood at the bottom of the bag and burst into tears at the thought of the suffering that represented. I ended up putting it back in the supermarket fridge!

All animals have unique personalities.

How I was like with animals? Quite apathethic. Neither like nor dislike.

Anything that would annoy me will be driven away.
Anything that would endear me will be approached or spoilt rotten.
Anything else are to be left alone respectively.

As a child?
I want a cat but I was never allowed to merely because of my easily irritated nose is mistaken for allergy.
Instead, the house get dogs who are either caged or make too much mess more than worth.

I grew up on a beef farm, and did not feel close to even the dogs and cats. I hunted gophers until I saw that they did not die painlessly. Soon after leaving, I became vegetarian, and then adopted a "rescue" dog that I had a great relationship with. He was half Alsatian, and I could walk anywhere with him without being told to get a leash for him, he was so well behaved in stores and offices. Outside, he would range farther away from me, according to how quiet the street was. If I was going to take him out, he would move to the door mat about ten minutes before I started getting my coat on, but if I was not taking him, he would not move from under the kitchen table, without a word spoken. I could surprise him, though, if I stopped on the sidewalk and looked at him for "which way?" because I only wanted a walk. He'd spin happily and then head off, showing me far more interesting places than I knew about. When I wanted to return, I only had to stop, and he'd head home a new way.
Now, when I see a cat or dog, I also see a wild animal who has nothing to eat, and I am vegan. However, dogs love me almost universally. One friend says that his dog barked at almost all visitors, and was wary of most, but that when I arrived, even her fur stayed flat.

I was always scared of them to begin with up until my neighbours dog nipped me. From there just didn't have much fear of animals.

I might be taking over a friend's place, and expect to be able to co-exist peacefully with (well fed) black bears there. I'm a lot more worried about the local humans.

I've always been drawn to animals, and have always preferred them to people. They're always worth it.

Even as a small kid (4 years) I had no problems understanding that our new budgie was fragile and I was very gentle when I petted him. I wasn't necessarily all that gentle otherwise, but it was obvious to me even before my parents tried to guide me, that the little bird was to be handled with care.

I always had a good relationship with most of our pets, some more than others. My most meaningful connections were with my turtles, dogs and one of my guinea pigs. The only animal I failed to connect with was the Japanese dancing mouse, as it seems she had no reaction to anything. Years later I learned that these mice have an ear problem that makes them all dizzy, and that may have contributed to why the poor animal was the way she was.

Even though I've always loved animals, I never cared much for typical animal books as a kid. I needed more action in my books! I loved The Famous 5 and how important Timmy the dog was in the series, but I couldn't get into books like The Incredible Journey or the books about Lad until I was adult. My mother OTOH, who also loves animals, have always loved them, even when she was little.

From early age and until 2010 we always had pets. It's emptier not to have pets anymore, the loss of the last one sent me into my only bout with depression, lasting for 3 years. I don't think I can handle that again
Losing pets is no different than losing human family members

I will always love and be drawn to animals. I'm currently happy about new neighbors. Why? Because they have a puppy!! It's very cute. I don't know the sex or breed yet but I hope I will get to know him/her in due time.

^^ FYI, Skilpaddle, to me your avatar looks as if they are peeking around a corner, with that hard vertical line.

It makes me very sad when people don't understand their animals. Bovine, for instance, is a language of inflection, but most Cowboys can't tell the difference between "C'mere, honey" and "HELP!!" Reddit is full of stories of pets "acting funny" when they clearly were trying to communicate something urgent. Often, they lead a miserable existence, deprived of interest and opportunity. To a dog, a walk is about smelling things, not pedometer clicks. City folk will put great effort into managing the local wildlife humanely, and then dump trapped animals farther away where nature can't support any more of their kind, setting up a deadly fight.

When the human population passed two billion, it fundamentally changed our relationship with animals. Feeding domestic animals, and conquering wilderness with machines to do it has begun the next great extinction event, already being written into the fossil record. Our success is as dangerous to nature as a supervolcano or giant meteor. So, I'm vegan and I don't feed animals except for my kitchen scraps. I try to meet wild animals instead. Yesterday, the Chipmunk I watch from my kitchen came and had many close-up looks at me while I was raking around his collection of pine cones. My friend with the bears has barn swallows that return each spring.

I love animals of all kinds. I would never want to hurt an animal, and I find scenes with animals getting hurt in movies disturbing. It may be a doublestandard, because I watch nature documentaries. Nature is harsh, but that is the way that they survive.

When I was younger, dogs and penguins were my special interests, and now I am interested in animals in general. I found that I made friends with dogs and other pets easier than with humans. My grandma had a dog that we considered our dog too, she was a big, hyper yellow lab. I always want to say hi to dogs whenever I see them. I like to stop and look at snakes, guinea pigs, and other pets in pet stores.

They are loyal, they don't judge you. I've become more of a cat person as I've gotten older, but I love dogs and cats equally.

I grew up with cats so it probably makes sense that I love them first and foremost. I'm indifferent to dogs most of the time but I don't like silky terriers. If I had one I'd shave it, heh.

We (me and my housemate) have three cats. Each time she said she wanted a dog, we would acquire another cat. All our cats were either unwanted or strays.

I was the child who would be found by dogs looking for someone to play with them on the beach, or who would have the local cats cone to their back garden for fuss and play, and when set to write about "My Best Friend" in primary school, wrote about the family cat.
