Yeah, I live here.
BC stands for "Bring Cash," because ain't nobody makin' any working for a living here..
Even people with above average incomes (more than $53K/year gross) are having a difficult time making ends meet in the Metro Vancouver area.
Disability pays $1133/month And people are allowed to work and make an extra $500/month or something like that by working w/o having your disability payment reduced. (Which is ironic... because people qualify for disability by proving to their doctors that they're incapable of working a job.)
Regular welfare has been increased from $690/month to $710/month. Many of the people on it are lazy af, but many others are actually disabled by something that doesn't qualify them for disability payments instead.
$1133/month is f**k all when you consider the average 1 bedroom apartment in the city now costs approx $2000/mo, but, not even full time working professionals can afford to live IN Vancouver anymore.. so why people on disability or welfare would expect to be able to is beyond me.
$1133/month isn't a lot of money to live on in Vancouver.. but it's still $1133/mo that doesn't have to be worked for and earned. Also, no one in BC (myself included) is required to live IN Metro Vancouver. We choose to, and with that make the sacrifices to lifestyle, savings, investments, retirement funds etc that come with that choice.
It's also expensive to live in other parts of the Province, too. But it's not impossible for people to stay in Metro Vancouver - it simply requires getting creative. People who used to live alone now have roommates. People who don't want full time roommates have part time Airbnb guests. etc.
Two people on disability bringing home $2266/month are taking home more money than I do for working 40h/wk at my apprenticeship starting wage, and if they don't have a car on the road, they can afford to pay to rent a 2 bedroom suite in the suburbs ($900-1000ish) & still afford food/medicine etc vs. being destitute and homeless.
EVERYONE here, at almost every income level, has to make adjustments and concessions to their expectations of quality of life and what they can afford to have and do IF they choose to stay here.
For myself, being HERE at the ocean, with mountains & forests etc is far more valuable than money. Plus friends/family/loved ones etc. I'd rather be poor here than have more money in the bank somewhere else. Sure, it gets stressful and challenging at times, but thankfully I am Not a materialistic person and even on a very low income I'm still able to pay my rent, eat well, drive around in a brand new car, and be able to afford to buy gifts for others. As my income rises, I'll be able to do a few more things again w/o going backwards financially and won't have to make as many "either or,' purchase decisions - like sacrificing kiteboarding & parties this Summer for One party and motorcycle riding lessons. As much as we're in an extremely unaffordable real estate market, we still only have first world problems here.
I feel more for people who's incomes are also as low as mine (although mine is merely this low temporarily until I log enough hours for my first raise, then the next, and a gov't grant for sticking with a trade etc etc) who don't have the capability of working a second job or two And have a child (or multiple children) to provide for. It's VERY difficult for families to make ends meet. I'm blessed with only having to make enough money to sustain myself.
People on disability should be the First to get any sort of gov't rental assistance grant as they work out solutions to figure out how they're going to house all of us peasants as the Billionaires continue to buy everything up. God knows our prov gov't has wasted ungodly amounts of money on all sorts of stupid BS that could be better spent making the lives of disabled people a little less stressful - whether that's in the form of a rental grant or increases to their monthly payments, whatever, if they're truly disabled and Cannot work to close the gap between income & expenses, then I'd be okay with them receiving more money. If I were them, though, I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for any more money... they'd pass out and die before it happens. I'd be figuring out who was a suitable roommate, or how I could scrape together enough money to rent a place with a spare bedroom that could be whored out to tourists on Airbnb.
