Anyone else get sheer discomfort from going to a barbers or a salon?
The nature of the chit chat, being forced to look in mirrors 1 foot away but pretend you're not (how strange).
The invasive questioning.
The challenging of your own personal choices. I mean, you're the one paying! Why challenge what you want?

TL;DR - Need haircut. Hate the barbers a lot. Wonder if you all do, too.

Haha yeah, why do you think that I haven't gone for months even though my hair is super curly and annoying

On the bright side, I now look the closest to a real life sloth I have ever been, something I have always dreamed of.

Women can get away with going years without a haircut and people will just think we're more feminine for having long hair. (Because nobody looks close and sees how many split ends there are.)

The mirrors are usually two or three feet away, as I recall. And at least the last time I went, I faced away from the mirror.

But I like those places. They smell nice, and it feels nice on the hair.
Usually the person will do chit-chat while cutting, but if you ask the right questions they'll do most of the talking and you won't need to try explaining your personal life to an acquaintance. (I'm sure it helps that I'm an extrovert. Interacting with strangers doesn't bother me. I'm just clumsy at it.)

I'm a graphic artist, so I figure part of paying them is to get their professional opinion on what would look good for you. 'Cause I don't know much about hair styles/cuts and would like a second opinion (which I am then free to ignore).

I have a friend who is probably not on the spectrum, but who has high anxiety, and he likes the atmosphere but dreads the interaction of the haircut.
I saw another person (who as far as I know neither is on the spectrum nor suffers from anxiety) comment that his favorite haircutting place is run by someone who doesn't know much English, and it's nice that there's no talking involved.

I don't like having my hair cut at all. Even at home.

Basically my stepdaughter decides when I need a haircut and takes me to the barber's. She does the small talk with the barber .

Yep. I hate getting a haircut. Having to engage in small talk with someone for that long stresses me out. I’m growing my hair out, though, so I won’t have to worry about it for awhile. I’ll have my mom trim it.

I'm fortunate enough that the barber who cuts my hair doesn't generally seem to try to small talk with me. I'm thinking his English isn't quite good enough for him to be particularly comfortable making smalltalk in English.

There are worse things in the world to be sure, but I agree with you on haircuts.

I don't mind the physical act of someone cutting my hair too much other than when they put the clippers too close to my ears when they're buzzing or, occasionally when they've nicked my ears with the stupid things. What I don't like about haircuts is the following:

1) Women generally place great value on having a hairdresser they like much more so than men. I go to the woman who cuts my wife's hair. As such, I feel it's important for me to be personable to her. I feel I have to be "on". For YEARS I've had such an urge to say something like the following to anyone who cuts my hair:

"I appreciate you doing this. You do a great job and I find it very relaxing just sitting here while you cut my hair. I'm not a talkative person and this is actually some "me time". It's nothing personal at all so I hope you're not offended if I just sit quietly while you cut my hair?" It would be a perfect thing! Maybe someday I'll say that and if it worked and the person cut my hair to my liking, I'd stick with them forever.....

2) As soon as the haircut is over, I want to get home as soon as possible to take a shower to soap and rinse all of the stray cut pieces of hair off my head, forehead, face, neck, ears. I can't stand it. I actually schedule haircuts at the end of the day for that very reason. I must head home and wash the hair off me!! If I can't do that immediately I go into a bathroom, wet some paper towels and wipe as much of it off as I can as a temporary fix.

I never go to a barber shop. If my hair needs cutting, I'll either call up an acquaintance to do it for free or grab the scissors myself.

Coincidentally, the acquaintance is a former hairdresser.

Don't enjoy it really. I go there twice a year, and the guy who cuts my hair always makes a joke about how long it's been since my last visit. I don't like looking into the mirror, and tend to keep my eyes looking downwards. The barber usually talks to his colleagues rather than the customer, which I don't mind at all.

I was astonished to read quite recently that the average male in the UK spends around £360 per year on this sort of thing. My two visits amount to £24.

I don't really hate going get my hair cut but I used to hate the idea of getting my hair cut even at home when my mom would do it. My mom took me to get it cut 1ce when I was a kid & I hated the idea soo much that I didn't cooperate at all so she took me home without getting the hair cut. She was really p!ssed off with me about my bad behavior so I decided to cut it myself to make her happy since I much rathered handle my hair myself than have someone else do it. It looked horrible & I was so embarrassed after mom chewed me out over it that I hid in my closet. The doorknob got stuck & the door had to be taken off to get me out. Then I had to have my head shaved completely.

I was always getting my hair cuts at home by parents, but when I went to the barber a few times in the past, it was okay with me.
I don't like how you are kinda forced to stare at yourself because of the large mirror, in front of you. Some barber shops could remove that item, but in most of them it's always there.
So it's somewhere between an okay thing and an embarassing thing, I never gave it much thought until this thread was made.
I let my hair grow considerably before I receive a haircut. When I receive one, I prefer not to end up near bald or anything. Some barbers are pretty terrible at what they're doing, this profession isn't one for the history books.

Absolutely, I am glad my mother knows a hairdresser who has a child with autism. She's the only person who's ever cut my hair who didn't invasively question me.
