Does anyone see any point in it. I find it to be a bit irritating.

My nail guy loves to talk.....very surprising as first....this is a guy and secondly, East Asian....those are often reserved cultures. He doesn't get on my nerves with it...other people.....not so much.

I think it can lead up to more interesting conversation, that is, if the participants know how to keep the conversation going. I do find it to be pointless and annoying sometimes.

I dislike it, especially all the variations on just saying "good morning". I don't wanna answer "how are you?" You alright?" "did you have a nice weekend?" etc, but I'm quite happy with "hello".
Checkout operators annoy me when they are too chatty, I have some in some shops I actively avoid.

I think it's annoying sometimes. It's really awkward trying to make small talk with people that clearly don't like me, but I have to when I cross paths with them at work or church.
