It is not officially recognized though...
And how does one tell the difference between someone with MCDD and someone with autism and comorbid psychotic and neurotic disorders?

Please don't be like that.
I have heard of it quite a few times. In my country, they do diagnose it.

Honestly it seems to me like a lot of autistic people meet the criteria. For example, some autistics (like myself) become very attached to fictional characters and sometimes have a hard time telling the difference between reality and fiction, but I don't show any other psychotic symptoms and it doesn't interfere with my life, so I don't think I have MCDD. Also, laughing uncontrollably is common in autistics. And some autistic people have other comorbid disorders and that doesn't mean they have MCDD. It also isn't a valid diagnosis in the DSM-5 and ICD-10. I think overall MCDD is just another way of saying autism + tendencies of other disorders.

I stand by my opinion. Treating the symptoms of whatever diagnosis (or diagnoses) they choose to give you is what’s important at the end of the day.
You are being silly. Even NT's have autistic traits. Borderline, Bipolar, you name it, there are always mixed/similar traits. MCDD and say Asperger's are different. Have met people with MCDD and they are way different from people with Asperger's. It's also way more severe than Asperger's.

I agree. Unfortunately, these people don't take MCDD seriously

She is not “being silly” but has actually raised some very valid points. It’s not even a valid diagnosis in parts of the world that go by the DSM or ICD.
As did I, and she can defend herself pretty well.

The problem is that these symptoms would fit a variety of different diagnoses. As long as you’re open with your provider about your symptoms, there shouldn’t be a problem.

My point is exactly that there ARE mixed traits, but those mixed traits don't need to be labeled something else (MCDD) rather than just being labeled what they are. The anecdotal evidence of meeting people with MCDD vs Asperger's is different from actually looking at the criteria for ASD and MCDD and comparing them, then coming to the conclusion that there is such a significant overlap between traits that the diagnosis of MCDD has little use and it is much better to diagnose someone with autism and a comorbid disorder than MCDD. Like Twilightprincess said, why not just treat the symptoms rather than creating a whole new label when autism and comorbid (fill in the blank) would do just fine?

I would take it seriously if it was in the DSM or the ICD. Since it isn’t, it’s not a real diagnosis.
To give these people a place where they feel they belong. The people with MCDD are different, their way of perceiving reality, compulsive thoughts, emotion regulation, anger problems, social issues in combination with severe mental problems and so on make them not normal Asperger's. The people I talked with were amazingly happy they had a label they belonged to. Is that so wrong?

So many things are not in the DSM anymore. Even Asperger's, Classic Autism and PDD-NOS. Do you not take them seriously anymore
