Sometimes I wonder whether my wondering about ASD/dsypraxia/learning difficulty/NVLD is just a delusional obsession. The thing is though an antipsychotic doesn't take it away.

Autism and Asperger's are individuals with a different brain structure. This is documented by post mortem examinations of brains and by MRIs and other observational medical tests.

Autopsies of autistic, Asperger’s, and normal brains by Margaret Bauman and her colleagues reveal that in both autism and Asperger’s there is immature development of the cerebellum, amygdala, and hippocampus. Small cells are packed tightly in these immature parts of the brain, signifying true immature development, not damage or atrophy. Brains from people with autism are more immature in hippocampus development than are Asperger’s brains. The situation is reversed for the amygdala, a part of the brain that processes emotion. Here, the Asperger’s brain is often more abnormal than the autistic brain.

The British autism researcher Simon Baron-Cohen has done functional MRI studies indicating that normal people activate the amygdala to judge the expression in another person’s eyes, but people with Asperger’s call on fronto- temporal regions of the brain.

A study by M.M. Haznedar revealed that in the brain of the high-functioning autistic or Asperger’s person, the circuit between the anterior cingulate in the frontal cortex and the amygdala is not completely connected. As a result, people with autism or Asperger’s have decreased metabolism in the anterior cingulate.

Being an Aspie is not delusional but rather a physical condition. Therefore I would not expect antipsychotics to have a positive effect on the condition. The extreme stress that Aspies undergo can produce a wide range of mental health issues over time. Medications can treat some of these mental conditions that appear in Aspies.

I am not sure what you meant by delusional obsession. Aspies can obsess on almost any topic or subject. It is quite natural for an Aspie to become interested in Aspergers and Autism and research the subject with great vigor. In general anyone who has a medical condition wants to find out more about the condition.

Just based on the fact you made this post, it cannot possibly be a delusion. You could be wrong, or you could be right, but nobody here can know for sure whether you have ASD or not. Based on your other posts, you certainly have both significant signs and symptoms that may suggest the likelihood of an autism spectrum disorder, but only a professional can let you know for sure. I can tell you that it definitely isn’t a delusion, though. There is way too much insight present for that :D . I won’t deny that you may have other symptoms of delusion-like thinking based on your SPD diagnosis, but this isn’t one of them. Hope this helps.

Thanks Stampy. I actually have a paranoid pd diagnosis not spd. A nurse once said my symptoms might be explained by schizotypal while later giving me a printout to an Asperger's charity .

I have been noted as having psychotic symptoms and my risk history says delusions. I am on risperdal consta, a depot antipsychotic. I do believe that in some cases ASD is comorbid with psychosis . I've not heard of anyone here on the forum who has both though.

Oh that’s right. Sorry about that!

I have seen people here who are diagnosed with both ASD and psychosis. The two aren’t always commorbid, but it can definitely happen. The difficulty is in trying to find which symptoms, if any, were present before the psychotic-like symptoms appeared.

I have ASD and have had psychosis. My doctor thinks it’s related to depression, though (Major Depression with Psychosis)

The social interaction difficulties came way before any psychotic-like symptoms .

Yeah, you seem to have significant reason to consider autism based on your experience, although I am no professional. In my opinion, I would attempt to do away with the significance of the labels, though, and just focus on how you can improve your quality of life with the knowledge you have. I used to obsess over whether autism was the right diagnosis, but I have learned that it probably is, and that I probably haven’t been misdiagnosed, and I am trying to let go of needing the absolute certainty because there is no possible way to have that as there isn’t anything that can tell you for sure.

I had a delusional obsession that I was going to get my groove back by the third week of August this year. It's not going to happen. I took down Kinks pictures to make way for a German flag. It's not going to happen this year and it's not going to happen next year. My hair could be a little longer by this time next year, but that Swinging London groove just swung up to someone half my age and it's not coming back.
