I get to help autistic kids!

For two weeks later this month I'm volunteering at a social skills class for elementary school kids. I think it is going to be a very rewarding experience to help other people with autism.

I like this idea. We often forget our youths
disgressions and behaviours, especially if
your autism spectrumed. I hope to hear
some more details from your more mature
perspective.

A group of psychologists are organising it. They do a lot of child psychology.



That is the office that I go to. My therapist (who works with the people who are running it) recommended that I should help them. So to answer your next question:



Absolutely. That was the main reason that I'm doing this.



I hope to offer some personal experience and some perspective of someone who has been there. I also want to show the kids that I can relate to them.

The first session is from June 20 to June 30. The second session is from July 26 to August 4. I'm going on vacation during the second session so I can't help then.

I've thought of doing something like that someday, maybe try it at a school and then maybe bring that experience to the Boy Scouts for some advanced life skills training. It worked great for me when I got a late start in the Venturing crew.

I got the opporuntiy last summer to work ( I got paid too! ) to work with kids and young adults who have AS/HFA at a university workshop. I had a ton of fun, and yes it was a very rewarding experience. One guy I knew from the intergrated pre school I used to attend when I was real little as part of early intervention.


I also volunteered at the pre school I used to go to for a lil bit. But, even though I was well liked by the kids, I found bringing myself to their level very emotionally demanding, and therefore had to quit.

I seem have to no patience for lil kids, I took my lil sister and her two lil friends out to the wave pool, and they really were getting on my nerves. All I wanted to do was have a good time.

Like I was saying about "the link". That is pretty much what I meant. I figure that we would have some better understanding for full on autistic people than ordinary folks would.

No. It's just a regular psychology office. But I will keep everyone posted on how it goes.

So the first class was today. It was at a neuropsychology clinic. A psychologist is in charge, and there are two helpers (me and a girl studying sociology in college). The kids I'm working with are 5-7 years old. There are six kids in the class (four boys and two girls). I don't know if all of them are on the spectrum, or what their diagnoses are. They obviously have some issues or they wouldn't see a neuropsychologist.

It went really well for the first day. The kids are mostly working on team building skills and how to interact in a group (being polite, taking turns, listening, giving compliments etc.). I'll keep everyone posted on how it goes.
