I definitely have Asperger's and certain situations make me anxious- I am unsure if the Asperger's has something to do with it or not. I am an avid bird watcher, but do not feel comfortable bird watching anywhere but 5-6 spots near my home. I would love to see more birds, but I just cannot get myself to go to different areas- there's one reason or another holding me back. I am learning to drive, which is going well, but after a minor accident (colliding into a small tree) with one of my parents' cars, I feel like the same thing could happen again. I also write for a hobby, but I do not want to discuss what I write to any/many people for fear of getting rejected or criticized for what I write. I want to advance myself in life and get over my fears, but I am unsure if I can... I hope so. Could these anxiety-inducing situations have something to do with the Asperger's or are they unrelated?

Maybe it is. New things are surprising, and many things are not easily get used to, to the point of frustration and intolerance towards uncertainty and lack of 'order' -- that's aspergers.

Anxiety, in my opinion, is more of a consequence of being surprised and getting caught off guard over and over, not getting used to things too often, being denied of or being dissed off all over again, sometimes apparently without a reason, especially when many of those things just sudden happens without warning, and ending up being more intolerant towards uncertainty than an actual part of aspergers or even the spectrum. :|

But one thing is certain; it is common with aspergers. Then there are plenty still living in it and still function with it. They may help you cope.

And, it's just possible to overcome it. Except I couldn't help you with that yet, because I don't know how to explain it.

Unfortunately, at 16 some of that just comes with the territory such as the fear of rejection or criticized. That describes a majority of teens, though some don't show it as much, they have it. Being a teenager sucks and yet you can have some of the best moments of your life. I was a miserable teenager, yet I now look back and note that I had some of my best times then. Still, the miserable portion was probably the bulk of my time. Am I being encouraging yet? :)

Why do you not feel comfortable at other locations for bird watching? Do you fear being seen and questioned about what you're doing why you're there? I'd expect that to be a normal type of concern about it. Not many like having what they're doing to be questioned.

Are there any birding groups in the area that you could check out? That might help you expand the areas of watching while being with people sharing a similar interest.
