How do you guys go about judging which meds you need? Just whatever your primary doctor recommends?

I know it is smarter to just listen to the professional, and I don't mean to be subversive, but she's prescribing all these depression and schizophrenia-related drugs and I don't feel very good about having to take these every day. I'm a bit obsessive but I'm not schizophrenic(I know you don't have to be schizophrenic), and I might be down from time to time but I don't think I have a problem with depression. I understand the Adderall but I don't quite like having to take them from time to time.

My doctor insists that I need to be medicated but I'm not so moved. Any advice, similar stories?

Get a second opinion.
Also ask for regular medication reviews or you'll be on them forever (this is what I've found anyway)

I was on schizophrenia related drugs for nausea, I take ginger now, does the same thing.

Thanks, my largest issue has been short-term memory, of which I wasn't looking to be medicated for but after nothing was found on a head scan my doc just started giving me every and anything. She's not really compromising with me anymore on what I should take, and now I feel a little bad for not listening to her but I'm just returning the same energy she's giving me. Going to see about a second opinion

Your doctor is prescribing antipsychotics to help with short term memory? That's stupid. Medications like Risperdal are used with autism to help with anxiety and irritability, but those meds are more likely to detract from short term memory than help it. Adderall I can see as being beneficial (and is something I take myself). Maybe ask your doctor if he/she is considering other diagnoses on top of ASD that would warrant these prescriptions?

I’ve never taken a prescription drug. Much rather smoke weed.

She says my obsessiveness is stopping me from thinking clearly, which is why I have problems focusing and overthinking. Wants me to treat the obsessiveness with anti-psychotics, but I do suspect that she has other diagnosis's on her mind, going to see if we can reach better understanding next time I see her

So, you'd rather cause issues for other people?

And be careful with that, weed caused my sister to develop schizoaffective disorder and in many people in the long run messes up your brain far more than it helps.

I agree that you need a second opinion, anti psychotics can be dangerous when you don't need them for psychosis.

If you are at loggerheads with your doctor, you pretty much do have to find another doctor. You will be paranoid about what the current one is trying to do, and they will view you as increasingly resistant.

If you can reason with the current one, including saying "Well, I don't feel comfortable with this approach, is there anything else we can try?" then it might make sense to stick with them because they have history with you.

Don't "doctor shop" for someone who agrees with your perspective, but do find someone who can support you and who will give your opinions equal weight to their own.

Can a shrink gaslight a patient? ABSOLUTELY! (gaslighting would be making you seem crazy just because you won't go along with their approach)

I have one medication I know I have to take. Nobody can make me take anything I don't need.

I concur with Raleigh and Bea. Getting a second opinion is a good idea. I really did not get my meds straightened out until I found someone who would listen to me, discuss it, and make mutual decisions.

It is true that some psychiatric conditions can make it difficult to make good decisions. On the other hand, so can some medications.

I hope you can find someone who will work with you.

I’m in excellent health. I’m not even on team anxiety.

I didn't know what was wrong with me a few years ago when I ended up getting a 5 year contract. I went to see the Wing Psychiatrist about my issues. HFA never came up. He put me on Zoloft, but that turned me into more of a hermit, only going out for work and when I had to. Then he put me on Paxil, but taking that for a year with no change (I was deployed for 6 months with a large supply) he wanted me to go on a two-stage drug. Take first, if no change, take second.

I thought about it for a while and decided I didn't want to be dropping whatever he thought might help. Haven't taken anything else since. Most of the anxiety-causing reasons reduced once the neuro diagnosis for other stuff was handed to me.

I am back to the way I was without drugs.

^Yea, I got a bit weary after the prescriptions for Buspar and Latuda on top of all the other things she wants me to take.

Thanks for the responses guys. I don't like to be at odds with people over minor things but I consider this to be otherwise. Going to do all that I can

Cannabis is far safer than many equivalent prescription drugs, but like everything - has to be taken responsibly.
Prescription drugs have messed me up royally, I'm in Buc's camp.

For one thing he said smoking which is never safe and longterm effects haven't been tested with weed.
