Why does having Aspergers make you say weird/inappropriate things?

It can make you very literal and truthful which can be taken by others as inappropriate.

I'm very apt to say inappropriate things. I find it best not say things at all.

I do recognize them as inappropriate. (Inner dialog: Wait? What did you just say!? You eeediot).

I know better than to talk about my favorite things, because they aren't popular topics of conversation with most people. I have friends who are understanding of me and I can open up to them.

I have no idea whatsoever, even after decades of trying to figure it out. It can either (usually) make you into a very unpopular person lots of other people avoid, or (rarely) into the next Robin Williams. I bet a lot of comedians are Aspies.

Or, if not Aspies, many had AD(H)D, I imagine.

I think it has to be like baseball in that there are plenty of better plays, but then sometimes these better plays work out well and are appreciated and sometimes they’re not. And then, neurotypical persons seem to take the whole thing less seriously.

And I know there’s no such thing as ‘normal’ anyway, and how boring a place the world would be if there were! :jester:

But persons not on the spectrum usually seem just not to take social interaction that seriously and if asked, could hardly remembe what they said.

Okay, I’ve had some success making a conscious decision to turn down my internal censor so that the default setting is that it’s probably okay to go ahead and say it anyway, unless it clearly jumps out at me as inappropriate.

Combined with, if a person needs space, go ahead and give them space.

When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed. Say something once, why say it again?

This, combined with bad cognitive empathy (difficulty seeing things from another's perspective).

If you think literally and have trouble seeing things from another's perspective, it will tend to result in saying things that aren't appropriate.

That said, many of us are are capable of learning what's appropriate in many situations; we just have to learn it by rote where it will come naturally for most NTs.

Because autistics see the world in weird ways

Precious lil "people" act like every thought and emotion that goes through their head is the latest greatest scientific invention

If they like it they say "cool. Otherwise, "sucks". If they weren't listening ," what?"

That's not "weird"

"Weird" has a negative connotation but is not always bad

I blurt strange things sometimes. I don't converse verbally so it doesn't come out in conversation. Almost like tourette syndrome, but more of a stim than a tic.

I'm always coming up with weird phraseology because what I say reflects what's in my head---rather than reflecting upon the outer world beyond me.

I only tell about my interests to people who are generally accepting of me. My interests, while positive, are definitely not in line with the prevailing pop culture.

I said lots of weird stupid things as a kid cuz I was trying to fit in & be funny but it really caused my peers to think I was ret*d. A lot of those things I heard on various TV shows. Usually some teen or adult themed cartoon.
