Self depriciating humor is a helpful coping method sometimes. Better to be laughing at oneself then be depressed. If one is not laughing at oneself but uses self depreciating humor because they hate themselves, not good.

It's tricky. My daughter and I can do this with each other and enjoy a good laugh. But you almost have to know your audience that well before you can be confident you will be entertaining and not demeaning.

I can make fun of myself all day long. My kids can make fun of me all day long because we are all on the spectrum. If someone else makes fun of me or my kids.... I'm going to kick your ass. Literally.

Of course we can, but we have to be careful about the time and the place. Among other autistic people who struggle with accepting their autism and are in a mentally unstable condition for one reason or the other? Not a good idea. Among a few people who have a similiar sense of humor and similiar values? Go for it!
