My usual response to something new in my life is to read as much as I can about it. What books about Asperger’s and/or written by autistic adults would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Even though Tony Attwood is usually not seen as having Asperger's, I would read his works.

I would also recommend the youtube videos of him speaking. That would give you a good idea of the info he presents and his communication style before purchasing a book.

I recommend that you read works by and for autistic women.

I don't think that reading books by Tony Attwood will help most women, since we present differently than men.

Books...I have read so many. Most important one to me is:

Mental health aspects of autism and Asperger Syndrome
by Ghaziuddin, Mohammad.

After that, anything by Valerie Gaus, anything by Cynthia Kim, and "The Autism Spectrum, Sexuality, and the Law" by Nick Dubin et al. Many others are good too but those especially come to mind.

Some of Tony Attwood's talks on youtube are specific to women - that's what clued me in that I could potentially by on the spectrum. I think he has written a couple articles on that topic as well that I found on his website.

Let me know what books you read and find most helpful. I typically check things out from the library rather than purchase, and mine has little on women with autism/asperger's.

I also echo the recommendation for Cynthia Kim - she also has a (not update now) website called "Musings of an Aspie"

I would recommend the book "In an Unspoken Voice" by Peter A. Levine. Although this book is not Aspie specific, I does get to the root of the problem which is extreme stress and how to resolve and normalize stress loads.

I started out with Donna Williams as her books were pretty much all that was available in my teens when I first came across autism and had thought, hey that's me. They look old fashioned now, but honestly they're as good a place as any to start And because they're old you can get cheap second hand copies on Amazon.
