Music really seems like the only thing I understand in this world. All my life, I've felt a strong, unusual connection to it. All I want to truly do is listen to it, sing to it, cry to it, etc. This whole thing of being an adult- working, paying bills, taking responsibility for scary things in life- is all so unappealing to me. Perhaps since I'm an aspie, I have a heightened sensitivity to the collection of sound that creates songs. I'm not sure. But the first time I listen to a song- may it be of ethereal sound or it contains eloquent lyrics- I feel chills and wetness developing in my eyes. My imagination grows even larger listening to music. I feel each note strike my emotions. I wonder if most of the world population feels this.

I guess what I want to aim for in this topic is that I think I have this passion for music because of my autism. I want to ask whoever views this if they have the same thing. Perhaps you feel these exact emotions toward a different subject. What are you passionate about?

I always found music boring until I found rammstein and other neue deutsche harte bands. That specific kind of music resonates with me strongly. Most mainstream music I find boring at best or annoying at worst.

I love Rammstein. I've always found the German language fascinating, so the first time I heard "Mein Teil," I was enthralled. Great band, and I definitely agree with you on mainstream music. I find it all pedantic and it sounds all the same. There's no originality.

I like music, too. I am a fan of 1950s and 1960s Rock and Roll, anything fun. I also like to sing.

My greatest passion in life is animals, particularly cats.

Making, listening to, and dancing to music are certainly the best things ever for getting me into a "flow-state" where I can get away from my worldly worries and recharge my mental batteries. A perfect combination of meditating and stimming.

I have that connection to music too. I'm always listening to music and creating scenarios in my mind. I also create a lot of playlists for my ships.

I feel the same way about music. It’s remarkable how much music affects my thoughts and feelings.

I play the piano, and when I’m doing so, it feels as though the music (including the raw emotion) is emanating from inside me and the piano is just an extension of my body. It’s really hard to explain, but it’s an incredible feeling.

When I listen to music on the radio and am singing along as I often do, whatever song it is, suddenly becomes my song.

There’s something that’s incredibly personal and yet universal about music. Even if the lyrics are in a language that I don’t understand, I can relate to the voice and the accompaniment on a really deep level. Whatever piece of music it is, it gives me another glimpse into myself and what it means to be human.

I really love music.

Playlists for your "ships"????

Sea going ships?

Star ships?

Or are you talking about "ships"...folks you have paired as couples in your imagination?

I have been collecting and streaming music for almost ten years and for me my music world is a kind of paracosm. Sometimes I would like to disappear and live there forever and also often consider changing my name. I am working on creating some balance between that and being more functional in the "real" world.

I like music enough to make some, but I get passionate about saving the planet. There is no theoretical minimum energy needed for a round trip, and we are making steady progress at reducing it.

I make music. Or sounds.

Got to. It's cathartic. It's my release. Should do it more.

I totally agree with you. I'm a dancer, music is why I dance. I often think I would be just fine without words, but I need to move to communicate the feeling of music.

I think most people do enjoy music, but there is something about the intensity of it with autism. There is a chapter in Animals in Translation about animal communication as music. Something about music being more connected to our emotions and animal brain than language. I can't exactly remember what it says and I'm sure I'm saying it wrong, but I feel like music doesn't take any translation to understand in the way that abstract conversation does.

^ I've always had a preference for music without lyrics, or with lyrics in a language that I don't understand, for just that reason. There are a few songs where I can have a bit of a sing-a-long, and I love the sound of a good voice, but generally words are too distracting once my brain starts trying to decipher their meaning, even though (or maybe because) I'm usually such a word-oriented thinker.
