I have too much of a sense of purpose. I see myself as somewhat lazy, but everyone else calls me a workaholic.

I have goals, do they count? If I ever get back into grad school and eventually a PhD program then my sense of purpose should return. I just need to do alot of work and need some help on some big issues to get there.

With all the crises our generation has dumped in the laps of the young, I don't intend to add to them personally, even if keeping me as a vegetable is a job opportunity. I'm sure I wouldn't enjoy it as a semi-veggie, either.

No sense of purpose

Used to be structural engineering

Then flunked out

No friends

One exception

But that friend has monopoly and could dump me, or drop dead

Clinical depression

No skill at anything

No job skills

Everything has seemed stupid and meaningless since structural engineering

For eleven years I have taken aikido

500 lessons plus

Going nowhere

Too many pain receptors

Can't pay attention

Socially awkward

Owe the head instructor $$$$ and she could call 911 on me or win a lawsuit against me

My skill is bad

Besides, unless you are an instructor or professional competitor, martial arts is  not  a purpose

Oftentimes I get itchy. Allergic to Rolando

Job search going nowhere

All the jobs I qualify for are minimum wage, unskilled

Restaurant retail sales

Office

Jobs nobody wants

That is not the kind of job that is the purpose of anyone's life

"Death of a salesman"

Some people might want to be chefs, or entrepreneur, accountant, engineer, politician, singer, actor, dancer, musician, writer, athlete

But waiting tables is not something anyone particularly enjoys. Few exceptions

Auntblabby, I haven’t got a clue how people find a purpose! I suppose to exist is my purpose  at least I’m accomplishing that  unless we are all living in a simulation...

Muia, i can tell you that at least when you get to be an old geezer like moi :bigsmurf: that sometimes a purpose will sneak up on you. it may not be a full-bore "life's purpose" but it could be a sub-purpose that will give you a further reason to get up in the morning. if you find something you really like, that could be your purpose even if it isn't conventionally remunerative as our culture is fond of. if just doing this thing gives you joy, that IMHO is close enough to a purpose to be good. :)

I have pretty much foundered around most of my life, but like AB above, a sense of purpose snuck up and grabbed me. Now with declining health and energy, I don't know what will happen next. Still working, but the sense of purpose no longer can drive this old body.

Not all purposes are equally justified

The Holocaust is a purpose
