Worrying about something every day
I feel like I worry about something and I seem to think sometimes it must be impossible to live everyday without worrying about something because surely people must worry about something every day and how can you live a life without worrying? I seem to think when I see people's happy photos on social media that their lives are all worry-free and having more fun and enjoying life more than I am because they are not worrying. I do at times try and manage these worrying thoughts by rationalising and getting my mind on something like for example finding something to laugh about. I do feel like I am the only one.
Chris,
Welcome to the world of Aspergers. Having a more complex / faster / sensitive (?) neurology brings some difficulties as well as some advantages. For example, a greater ability to focus ones attention can be helpful in accomplishing many tasks. However, it can also be a hindrance by making us a little more insensitive to what is outside of the field of focus.
Worry is often the result of anxieties about possibilities of which we are able to consider more deeply than many others. Much of managing Aspergers involves strategies to reduce anxiety. You mention distraction with humor as one strategy you have found successful. There are others such as using music with an MP3 player, repetitive tactile stimulation such as rubbing ones fingers or using Greek "worry beads", or diverting ones attention into a special interest such that less attention is given to foreboding.
Anxiety might be seen as similar to a recreational drug user who inadvertently took too much speed. The engine is racing, but there is nowhere to go. It can be helpful to experiment with different management strategies to discover ways this energy could be put to more useful purpose.
